I stumbled upon this wireless router. Does anyone know if its a good router. I lookded for a newer firmware but I dont believe there is any.

Does this router have any real security issues?

Is there something I should know which I'm not asking in regards to this router?

Thanks in advance.

I'm running WinXP Pro w/ a DSL connection.

I've owned one of these since it came out almost 3 years ago with no problems. I don't think they've updated the firmware for quite a long time so it doesn't support WPA and probably some other newer security features. I live in a neighborhood full of old, clueless people some I'm not real concerned about security. 😉 I do have WEP enabled and that seems to keep everything secure. If you only have 802.11b devices, and aren't too concerned about security, it will probably work fine for you.

Wireless security for home use is really quite overrated. You have to think about where you live, how many people (and how smart they are) live around you? Do you really care of other people use your internet connection? How important is your data and would someone relaly want to sit outside your house and try to hack it?

That being said.. If you enable WEP Encryption, and you Disabled your SSID Broadcast, and you use MAC address filtering, 99% of people will be safe for home use.

I've also had one for over a year, and it's been good to me. It has a stronger signal than other routers I've used (the Actiontec that came with my second DSL provider, the SMC Barricade my G/F had). The only problem I've had is that every now and then it'll lose the Internet connection, but that's probably just the DHCP client lease expiring. It's easily fixed by cycling the power, and can probably be reset remotely through the firmware's release/renew (haven't tried that yet).
