Linksys BEFSR41 problem

I got a problem with my router. I already have one computer connected to the internet but my other computer can't connect to the internet. The router is the DHCP server. The router has the lights on for the problem computer but it can't connect to the internet or communicate with the other computer. The computer thinks the DHCP server is 255.255.255.255 according to winipcfg. I have tcp/ip configured for "obtain Ip address automatically". The DNS is configured for 192.168.1.1 and the gateway is configured for 192.168.1.1.

If you are going to configure DNS at all, it needs to be the name servers from your ISP.

Well, I'm posting this message from a system plugged in to that router, and have a shop full of others plugged in to it, all of which are configured with my ISP's primary and secondary DNS entries, not the IP address for the router - which is what 192.168.1.1 is.

I think you should disable DNS on your PC instead, and leave default gateway blank also. DHCP server will transfer those information to your PC. Also you might want to check router DHCP setup and make sure it has a range of IP's available.

That's definitely not right. The DHCP server is the IP of the router. I don't know how to fix that other than to set up the computers with their own IP address.

Russ is right, the DNS needs to be set to your ISP's name servers.

Your Linksys gives each one of your pc's an IP address through DHCP.
Each pc must have a different IP and be able to talk on the same subnet. Typically 255.255.255.0

DNS however is the system that maps IP addresses to names and vice-versa.
Your hardware linksys doesn't contain information or memory to store the countless names and IP address information.

Your ISP however does have DNS servers. All they do is exactly that, they hold all that information for the transition from website name ( registered through ICANN ) to IP address that has been called recently. If your DNS server doesn't have that information it forwards the request to a global DNS server. ( Or one that is closer )

You need to enter the DNS servers from your ISP or you can't find websites by name.

Ooh, CZ brings up a great point! There is a section where you set the number of IP's it will dish out. It defaults to 5, but if this somehow got blanked, then that would explain it.

The subnet of 255.255.255.255 is what Windows assigns if it is not told otherwise. This is what would happen if the system wasn't leased an IP address from the router.

So, this is definitely one area to check.

I can't even get in to the router anymore. I typed http://192.168.1.1 into the browser and it says teh page cannot be displayed.

The router is configured to use the ISP's DNS servers.

I went thru two Linksys BEFSr41 that acted weird. When I change the default password to a different one, one of my two computers can't access. I returned that one and the next one drops the other2 computers when I enabled port forwarding for my PC. The Linksys has documented problems with firmware/hardware. It corrupts downloads too (and locks-up with big DL). It also has a one year warranty so make sure to make it work. I also noticed that the second one won't go into 100 full-duplex mode, even with a Linksys 10/100 NIC. Just make sure to update the firmware. I exchange mine to a different brand router/switch.

I can go into the router now but I only get one chance to set it up after I reset the router. Is this supposed to happen? After I go to the setup, I can't go back once I exit.

Yay, I got it working!!! The internet craps out after I play UT though.

Yep I had the same problem with games with the Linksys. It would drop UT and Tribes after a few minutes.
I went to the Netgear 314 and the problems went away.
