I'm thinking of purchasing the Linksys BEFSR41 4-port router. What are your opinons on this piece of hardware? I'll just be using it to LAN 2-3 computers and to share a broadband connection. Anyone had any problems? How easy it the installation?

I'm pretty new to networking computers and all that protocol stuff is a pain in the ass. Does this router make it easier?

Thanks in advance

I love mine. It is very easy to setup. You just hook it up to your broadband connection, connect all your computers and your good to go. The router grabs the IP from your ISP, and assigns IP's to all the networked computers. It also has several things you can configure easily through your browser. Just make sure you flash to the latest firmware when you get it..and you should be good to go..:)

Not sure exactly what you mean about setting up the protocol...I didn't need to do anything with my networking properties...my PC's just connected to the routee, grabbed an IP, and that was it. What OS are you going to be using?

Oh yeah, does anyone know if I still need to have ZoneAlarm installed on my Win98se system if I have this router? If it has hardware firewall capabilities.

You don't need Zone Alarm with the router, but you can still use it. The newest firmware actually is designed to work with Zone Alarm...

I love mine. I had some troubles getting it to work originally, but Linksys spent a very long time on the phone with me and got it working. They are a great company and the router is a great product!

I like mine, but occasionally it has trouble keeping my PPPoE DSL connection up. I tried the 1.40.2 firmware, but it just sucked, so I went back 1.39.

1.40.2 made the router reset every time I tried to access the router over the lan...

I've had one for about a year, and I love it. Never had any problems, and Linksys comes out with new firmware every couple months that just makes it better.

i tried the linksys wireless router and boy that was a huge pain. literally went through 5 of them before going to another brand. in addition their wireless card has poor drivers that don't properly support win xp. Linksys may good at some products, but their wireless products suck bad . linksys support was equally useless, and they were so clueless it was saddening. one of the pearls of wisdom they gave me was that updating the firmware on their wireless router has been known to cause instability. these linksys wireless router was probably the worst piece of networking equipment i have ever worked with.

concur with all above, makes a great xmas gift as well now that they have come down in price.

Rasputin, i have the wireless AP as well and was a little pissed off about thier reluctance to release the XP drivers for the WPC-11 PC Card. That is until i after i read a post that said it would work but only at 2MBits/sec. I finally got it working, bumped it up to 11Mbits/sex and now it works as good as it did under W2k. Don't know what to say here, the Linksys support pages didn't help and seemed to claim that it wouldn't work but it did.

I have been using mine for over a year now with no problems to report. It's a solid piece of electronics for the price.

BEFSR41 is a nice little router/switch. It is true that 1.39 was the last good firmware, but 1.39 works well. About once a month, it will refuse to pull an IP after the lease on the old one expires, and I have to reset it. Other than that, no complaints.
