OK, I've been having this bizarre problem with my Linksys BEFSR11 (one-port home broadband gateway) and I can't figure it out.
If I haven't been using the computer in a while (generally a half-hour or so), the first time I go to access something on the Internet (via ftp, http, or ssh) there is a pause of up to 30 seconds before that first action goes through. DNS resolution seems to work fine (in IE 5.0, the DNS name is almost immediately resolved to a correct IP), but everything's on hold (computer is responsive, but no net activity) for that first 30 seconds.
Any ideas? I'm not sure whether I should look to upgrade firmware (which I probably need to do anyway to get IPSec passthrough for a new work VPN), or whether there's something else I need to do. I'm running firmware 1.36, IIRC. Thanks for any help!
