Schmo - thanx for pointing that out. Having a router wouldn't hurt, but I'll still need a modem for my actually internet connection...I'll just keep shopping around...

Newbie here. I tried to PM w/ Outpost's price, but the Staples CSR insisted that I must pay 3-5 day shipping because it wasn't available from them overnight. I spoke to the supervisor and she held firm so I went ahead with the order for $109.95 + $8.95 shipping - $30 coupon + tax = $94.23 . After getting off the phone, I discovered that computers4sure.com was carrying it for $104.95 + $6 shipping. Called Staples back and changed the PM, and as Kelly Bundy says "VIOLA"! I saved $9!

Thanks for the Deals and keep 'em coming.

By the way does anyone know if it is illegal to charge tax on shipping charges??? I questioned the CSR when I called back, but it wasn't worth my time to argue about $.36

This is a awesome router. Easy to setup and continues to run without a problem. Those of you that might be experiencing problems make sure you have the latest firmware.

I just ordered a second one for a friend and got it at $85.19 shipped. Don't let them charge you for shipping. Some CSR will try to nail you because Outpost has free overnight but this is not available from Staples for 3-5 days so they can not charge you overnight shipping. If you get a CSR that tries, hang up and call a different CSR.

Port forwarding does work and it does NOT corrupt data. I have an FTP AND Web Server running and it works just fine.

Upgrade to the latest firmware and if you have done that then you have a defective unit. I think this thing gets a bad rap from the older firwares that have had problems. The latest is working great for me as well as several guys here at work.

I hate when people spread rumors about things they "heard," and start blabbing about how something sucks.

There is absolutely NO problem with running PPoE over this router. I do it every day, and I get consistently top speeds and no errors. Setup is a cinch, and this thing is top quality. I highly recommend it.

To all the folks who allege, however, that what I'm doing is impossible because PPoE doesn't work on this router, please point us to your source.

PPoE is problematic over some networks. Practically Networked has more information on the subject.

Suffice it to say that if you aren't running at LEAST the new version 1.37 firmware (just released in January), then you should be.

dwil: Since you have @home and are using this router....do you still use your cable modem or did this replace it?

This is what is confusing me from all that I've read and see on the back of router boxes. The connections would go: from my computer to a router, to my cable modem to the internet. Now - does the router replace the modem or not is what I'm seeking to know.

paradox, the linksys does not replace your cable modem

for most setups...

1) you leave the coax cable running from the outlet to your modem just as it is now

2) the rj-45 ethernet cable that used to go from the modem straight to your NIC now goes into the linksys router

3) you can now hook up to 4 computers to the internet by running rj-45 cables from the linksys router to the NIC card on each computer

i've had the router for several months now...setup is a breeze...just make sure you upgrade to the latest firmware here

One addition -

Assuming this router operates similarly to my D-Link and others:

You can hook up to 253 to one internet connection with the router. You are limited to 4 computers if you're only using this switch. But using multiple hubs or switches, your limit is actually 253 computers.

paradox0521,

As long as you're not concerning about being hacked, then you don't need to get router.

Besides, by using router, you eliminate the need of setting up a complicate network of using hub or switch. This router also works as a 10/100 switch.

If you only have one computer using the broadband, then you can save money and use Zonealarm program to make your computer tough for hackers.

I have this router (bought it several months ago from buy.com). It worked really well with roadrunner cable modem. I never had a problem.

I moved in December, and had to switch to DSL. I had horrible problems with this router. I'd disconnect about 5 times a day - and it would disconnect every time I VPN'd into work. However I downloaded the latest firmware in mid-January, and haven't had a problem since (well - maybe once a week, but can't tell for sure if it's DSL or router).

I'd definitely recommend this router IF YOU DOWNLOAD THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE!
