Linkseys network in a box

Was thinking of buying this kit to link two computers to the internet, gamming, ect. But was wondering about a couple of things. (1) do I have to have an external type modem to access the internet with? or will one computer dial up the connection and the other computer then share the one modem (internal type modem). (2) How pitifully slow will this be? will two computers using one modem allow two computers to play a session of QIII, Unreal, ect. at a decent rate (comparable to the ping rate I now get?) And (3) can I upgrade to a cable modem and still use this set-up at a later date to share cable modem service, or does that take an entirely different hub to do that with. I was looking at buying the 10/100 auto switching network in a box kit.
Thanks, I have never touched a network before, and any help would be appreciated.

Not to sure about the game end of it because I have never heard of the game, but a little info about the network.

You can use either type of modem, it does not matter.

As far as the slowness, you will be sharing the same pipe so I would imagine even the smallest amount of usage will slow it down if it is a 56K. Just have to try it to see. Look at the pipe as you would a water pipe. You can only get so much water in it. If someone turns off a faucet then the other will get more water.

If you get a cable modem you will be able to use it as well, but it depends on how you set it up within windows of how easy it will be to just add the cable modem later.

Good luck

1) Yes, you can use this kit to share a dial-up internet access... one PC will connect to the internet, which both PCs share that connection...

2) No sure... but the bottleneck would be with the slow speed of your dial-up modem, not the network...

3) Yes, you can use the exact same hardware and setup to share the cable modem... the cable modem will be connected to one of your PC, and both PCs share the cable access...
