Links with tutorials on cat6 networking setup

If yo need info about crimping Do not crimp.

Use solid core CAT6 for the long runs and punch them into Keystones.

Use short commertially made patches from the Keystones to the Networked devices.

Why not? I know people can screw it up, but in your own suggestion you seem to be fine with him fishing cables through his wall and punching them down into the wall outlets. I'd say that part is just a difficult, if not more so, than crimping. I personally think that if you're going to go as far as to run the cable through the walls yourself, then you may as well learn to crimp if you're interested. You can always easily replace the patch cables anyway... so even if you screw up the crimping you're not as bad off as if you somehow screw up the wall runs.

The thing is it's hard to mess up the wall runs and jacks.

Crimping ends most times yields cable that is category nothing and over time being bent will fail or continue to degrade. There's a golden rule for people that have being doing networking a long time - don't crimp ends on cables, only bad things happen.

Yep.

Besides, patch cables are dirt cheap anyway. We pay, what, $0.42 for a 7 foot CAT6 patch cable. My cabler could probably make them just as high quality, sure...but the 3 minutes it would take him to measure, cut, strip, and crimp would cost more in the long run.

If you want to do it for shits and giggles, go ahead...I've done it...but in the end, commercially made cables are superior.

Why not?

Coz life needs balance.

Years ago when every thing computers was very expensive (including cables & gadgets), it make sense if One is in the Red to try crimping.

Today when ready made patches are Dirt Cheap it does not make any sense.

In addition crimping long runs instead of using Keystones is not technically sound either.

There is a Time and place for every Thing the Time for crimping is Gone.
