"The (computer) server was not based in the US at all," O'Dwyer's barrister, Ben Cooper, who has also been heavily involved in the McKinnon case, told Tuesday's hearing at Westminster magistrates court. "Mr O'Dwyer did not have copyrighted material on his website; he simply provided a link. The essential contention is that the correct forum for this trial is in fact here in Britain, where he was at all times."

So the server wasn't on us soil, there weren't any copyrighted materials on it either, yet he's about to be extradited to the us for what crime exactly? Isn't any search engine basically committing a similar crime now if you do a search for copyrighted material?

We need to do everything possible to save jobs in Hollywood, people like JSt0rm depend on shows/movies to make a living.

How lovely, let's ruin the kid's life. We don't have enough criminals so we've got to turn this one bad too. That policy makes me sick.

meanwhile over in china you can buy the latest summer blockbuster on DVD for 25 cents.. right next to a legit copy of photoshop for 50 cents.

Why does hollywood hate poor people so much? If a person cannot afford to see a movie... shouldn't they have a right to free entertainment?

I don't know, ask JSt0rm. He works in the film business.

I work for a company that builds steam turbines and compressors that are used by many industries worldwide.

US Corporations are the driving force behind law enforcement. If their interests are compromised, you are fucked,... raw.

US companies are trolling for scare tactics. Its not where the guy is guilty or not, the news of his harassment is enough.

All that is being done here, the owners of the material want to set an example. Its not enough that you do not host the material, lets not even link to pirated material.

There does come a time where I can no longer feel any compassion for those who believe they have the right to freely consume other people's hard work.

And anyone who doesn't see the difference with google, you're just retarded. I'm sorry, but you are.

He knew exactly what he was doing. He's not innocent. He's an easy target for sympathy, it is extremely difficult to craft specific yet constitutional laws - but bottom line he is not innocent by any stretch of the imagination.

And I wouldn't worry one bit about this guy - enough people will be donating their bitcoins to him, he'll be more than fine.

goodbye google.

Owners of copyright protected material can request sites to be removed from googles index.

In other words, if a site is hosting pirated material, the owner of the material can request that google de-list the site.

Also, google is protected by the corporate vial. The chances of the CEO of google being arrested because google linked to pirated material is very slim.

Let's not pretend this is some granny who's grandson downloaded something off of bittorrent or something. Sounds like this guy was hosting a site. Do we doubt he was trying to make advertising money off of it?

I don't think bitcoins are going to do him any good in Federal Pound Me In The Ass Prison

That is just it. This isn't about downloading. He hosted a site that provide links to sites with the files.... most likely rapidshare type sites. Likely that page was coded to generate clicks.

but really... extradition?

I wonder if he actually created the locations where the files were stored?

goodbye google.

I can see a huge difference between - on the one hand - a search engine that displays "agnostic" results, where the intent of the search site isn't to make available copyrighted material and - on the other hand - a website dedicated to providing links to sites having pirated materials.

Intent is the key.

Edit: And if you think I'm saying that there aren't any gray areas in this, you're wrong. But I'm guessing the authorities are going after this kid because what he was doing was clearly over the line.

I know...I was just being a little dramatic.... but really.. is what he did any different then doing a google search? What he did was intentional of course (ad clicks)... but unless he actually created the sites where the copyrighted stuff was hosted... is it worth the cost/expense to extradite one person?

Anyway... by doing a little googling I see the U.S. authorities have been after him for some time... with the website moving from a U.S. domain to other offshore domains. This would explain why they are going after him in earnest.

I am not here to defend the guy or what he is doing... but just a little perplexed at the U.S. resources thrown at this website.
