I'm in the need to get into business networking to make connections in a few different industries. I'm not looking to sell anyone stuff, I actually need to buy stuff. But the stuff I need to buy is not common and pretty specific.

Is Linkedin a good way to meet connections for this kind of thing?
What about the premium services that let me send messages to people I'm not connected to? Is it more courteous to do things that way rather than adding them as a connection?

What else should I know about Linkedin?

go to trade shows. I guess you could cold link to someone if you must, but how would you know they have what you are looking for?

my experience with Linked In so far has been random people trying to add me so they can sell me stuff.

my recommendation is to look for trade shows and networking events in the fields you are interested. a lot of associations will have lunch / breakfast networking events.
