Linear motors / maglev?

What kind of efficiency / power can you get out of linear motors and maglev technology? I'm looking to use them in an application where large power usage or weight would be a problem.

Also can anyone explain this to me? Is it just an electromagnet and a slotted metal plate?

How well does maglev scale down? Could you build a reasonably efficient system about 4" wide? (I don't really need the maglev to levitate - just push forwards)

Thanks

Yes linear motors are made in that size range, Though 4" length is pretty short, more common would be 8" to 24" . They do not give them away, I would guess $10k to $20k range for a stage, controller and amps.
