I just got one of those cheap packard bell remotes and the winamp plugin, and its really sweet controlling winamp with the remote. I was thinking of putting an mp3 server up and sending the line out of the sound card to the line in on my card, and controlling winamp on the server with the remote.

would there be sound degredation from doing this? I have klipsch promedia's, with 2 outputs (front and rear) coming from my soundcard. if the mp3 server had just 1 output from the soundcard, would it hose up the seperate channels by the time it went thru my card?

the sound card on my machine is the sb live 5.1 platinum btw.

If you're worried about it, why don't you just share you mp3s and play them over the network on your computer? I have that setup. 1 computer hosts mp3 and the other 2 can play off of it. You can make playlists that link to mp3s on the network.

true that.

but I was also thinking of making this mp3 server a small portable that I can possibly put in my car and line out into the line in on my head unit, similar question - will there be degredation? how will it sound if I was playing 160kb mp3's thru a sb live! value or something, lined into my head unit? that much worse than straight off the cd in the deck?
