line array speakers and surround sound?

Kaido

I've seen some pics of line array speakers online, tall speakers with a ton of drivers in them...are these usually just used in stereo, for music, or is there some way to go surround sound with them?

Yes. Buy 5 of them.

 they're just normal speaker hookups but they have multiple drivers.

You're just talking about something like the legend pictured here, right?

and bingo was his name-o

basically they are expensive, but not all that hard to use in a surround setup i would imagine.

I wouldn't use line arrays in a surround system, that's not what they are intended for.

They don't behave even remotely like a single point source.

yeah, LAs are very different in performance from what you're used to...and it's not actually as you may think if you wanted to build one. A very popular LA 1-2 years ago was using the small Tang Band drivers...lots of time for the enclosure and wiring, but the parts weren't too bad.

Oh, I thought they were just a continuation of the normal multiple driver tower speaker concept... 😱 sorry.

you know, I'm probably better off going the normal route anyway. I'm going to build a Dayton kit off Parts Express first, and then probably the Dayton III MTM's from Speakerbuilder.net.

The BR-1s (shielded):

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-642

The Dayton III's:

Maybe throw in a line array down the road 🙂 On my budget (both time and financial), I'll be happy if I can do the Dayton III's by the end of the year. My eventual home theater plan/dream is to build a really nice 5.1 TV system with a glossy Rosewood veneer and an SVS tube sub and then a seperate projector room system with a 7.1 system and a 15" Adire Tumult or two. That's years down the road, however. I need experience and a house to do that 😀

yup, just like that. here's a fun project page I found:

http://www.ratch-h.com/farm.html

are they mostly for music or what? I just see a really tall speaker with a million drivers in it, I dunno much about them.

There's waaaay more girls on that site than I was expecting.

Hehe. I'd kill to get into that class. I believe the school is in California. Oh, to be in high school again...eh, nevermind, not worth it. I think the teacher is pretty cool to let them design and build the speaker projects and test everything. He should write a book on how to do it 🙂

normally with very very good on axis response, however they typically have poor off axis response.

what does that mean? on and off axis?

eh, someone recommend me a speaker theory website or book. all the math involved, crossover stuff, etc. I understand the basic concepts but not much else 😛

It's the angle to the speaker you're at.

If you're perpendicular to the front face of the speaker you're on axis.

( again, I hope I'm right 😉 )

adireaudio.com has some white papers, but those are normally on just their own speaker technology (XBL^2), diyaudio.com i think is a site.

On axis meaning you're sitting directly in the woofer line of travel, off axis meaning you're at some other angle to it.

ah, so it has a limited...soundstage? is that right? I've heard that some speakers have wide/narrow soundstages, which I'm assuming is like how much you can hear if you move around the room or whatever.

yeah, I've looked at both of those. Adire has some killer subs 🙂
