Line across monitor

I have a two thin, horizontal lines on my monitor that run all the way from one side to the other. One's about a third of the way up, the other a third of the way down..
The monitor is a 3 year old Dell P991 monitor, and I can only see the lines when there is a light colour patch behind them. Does it mean my monitor is beginning to conk out? I can only see the two lines on the whole monitor, not totally sure when they first appeared.
 
They first appeared when the monitor was manufactured. You have nothing to worry about they're supposed to be there.

Those are normal. If you have your monitor manual it should say in the troubleshooting section. At least thats where mine said it. They are their to fight off magnetic fields from the earth, or something like that.
 
its because the p991 uses a trinitron tube, i have the same one. Dont worry about them, most people here use trinitron tubes cause they have good qualtity

Don't worry about the 2 horizontal lines on the monitor. In reality they are 2 very thin wires behind the screen that actually hold up the aperture grill. This is a normal occurence and its only really noticeable when U have a white or light colored background. I have the same monitor as yours and I searched on the net for that same problem. I cannot find the link again right now, but rest assured your monitor is werking just fine.
BTW How do U like that monitor. I absolutely love mine and had it for about 6 months now (got it in a cross trade from my sister 🙂)

I'm suprised I never noticed them before. Thanks for the help.

We still have the machine the monitor came with, but we got a cheap monitor as a replacement so I could use this one with my new machine. I love it to bits, and hope it never fails 🙂
 

You love it to bits BECAUSE of those lines...it means it's an aperature grill monitor and probably a good one 🙂
 
I don't care how nice the rest of the screen is, having two dark, highly visible lines across the screen is intolerable for me. I've seen a very few aperture grille monitors where it wasn't so standoutish, but most of them I'd immediately remove from consideration as a personal purchase.
 
Having used the monitor for 3 years, I've only now really noticed them, and it was only be chance as I was looking hard at the screen while doing some Unreal mapping.
The monitor rocks apart from that.
 
Not on the new Dell monitors we have at work! They all shipped with a clear plastic sticker covering the screen with an explanation about the lines. They are absolutely intolerable.
 
I don't "stop noticing" something that quite obviously interferes with the image that significantly. Considering almost everything I do is on a relatively light background, I'd have them staring me in the face almost constantly.
 
I have one of these monitors and wondered about the lines myself. After I realized what they were, I no longer considered them. THey are not so noticeable to be a distraction.

You also dont speak from experience I believe. My friend never thought hed like a AG monitor because of the lines... he said hed notice them... last week I asked him about the lines.. he goes what? I had to remind him they were there. Hell Lonyo didnt even notice them until 3 years later LOL. Everyone thinks theyll be annoying, but I havent heard anyone complain about them after using the monitor for a bit.. you just dont notice them.

Fair enough. However, in my experience the majority of people who use a trinitron for any extended length of time will stop seeing the lines. I suppose some people are different though. I only see the lines when I make an effort to see them, even then I wouldn't say they significantly interfere with the image quality.

I agree, I barely even notice the dampers, even when I'm working in a light setting, and I think the quality of the screen overall more than outweighs their presence. This is on a true Sony E400. Wonderful monitor, about 2.5 years old now, and still beautiful as ever.

I used an AG monitor at work, I noticed them often enough to think I wouldn't want them at home. Plus, despite terrible vision in general and colorblindness, I notice "anal" things a lot - specks of dust on people's clothes from across a room, a 1mm difference in distance of the left side of a TV to the edge of an entertainment center compared to the right side.
 
My Compaq P900 uses a Trinitron tube, when I first unpacked the monitor there were four or five notices with different parts of the documentation saying what the damper wires were. There was also a big sticker on the screen telling people not to call Compaq support about the wires.

Personally I don't ever notice them until a thread like this comes around.
