Do you guys have some ideas for standing up to China that don't involve economic suffering? Or should we be standing up to them at all?

You know...there was this novel idea of the U.S. banding together the Pacific Rim countries under a trade agreement that excluded China, to give clout to the entire Pacific Rim to deal en masse with China. Wonder what ever happened to that?

The TPP was the answer. Remind me again, what was your stance on it?

Damn! You beat me to it.

I find it amusing listening to people who complain about China but who also complained about the TPP when they clearly didn't know anything about it.

Trump and the Republicans aren't 'standing up to China.' That's bullshit propaganda they're spewing hoping to get consumers to accept their sales taxes on imported goods aka tariffs.

In the meanwhile, the political donor class got some nice fat tax cuts to help them weather the storm.

I like how Leningrad Lindsey starts out blaming the Democrats for being for it before being against it:

“The Democrats for years have been claiming that China should be stood up to,” he said

The mealy mouthed fucker can't shoulder the responsibility for conservative policies that are hurting consumers, farmers and businesses across the nation. Sticking a knife in our economy and then telling us to accept it because that's what the Democrats wanted is pure, unadulterated bullshit of the highest order.

Meh. That wasn't even part of the discussion. A person has to be dumb as fuck to deny that China produces a lot of high quality goods at very low prices. That's how they've penetrated every market in the world. Their business acumen has transformed China over the last 40 years.

Yeah, you simply ignored this part: "No extra charge for their workers blood and tears."

There really is no comparison. The situations/times/countries/economies are far too different.

Just remember....
Every word out of little Lindsey Graham's mouth is like a dagger to the memory of John McCain.
Oh little Lindsey, how soon we forget.
Poor little Lindsey, floundering around, lost, with no one to guide him. And no one to look up to.
This is what happens when a child is abandoned. So sad, so very sad.

I have a piece of advice for you: The next time you hear something political that you like the sound of, you should read up on it first to understand what it's about. Actually ask critical questions about it. Why is it a good idea? Are there pros and cons to that political approach? Is it likely to work? What are the risks?

Parrots are cute when they mindlessly repeat stuff. Adult humans, not so much.

How about splitting the country in parts for those who don't want any part of the crap pulled by the Trumpers? Then they and you can have any trade war you choose

Lindsay Graham and Trump gave tax cuts to the corporations and billionaires, maybe they should feel the pain, and not the poor sap shopping at Walmart for his family.

Sure, get together with other regional trading partners of the Chinese and work to collectively pressure them. That would probably be dramatically more effective than this.

We could fall it the trans pacific partnership or something catchy like that.

Also we need a new president before we can stand up to China because nobody will make serious concessions to the one we have because he’s too untrustworthy.

Your allegation that the Chinese only make crap is patently absurd. Conditions for Chinese workers aren't any worse than for a lot of other countries, either, like Thailand, Vietnam & India. It's a diversion from the topic at hand.

My point is that cheap china goods have, and have had a cost far greater than the sticker price. Anything you don't want to address is a diversion, and a little what about on the side. If you want to be the alturistic person you claim, you can't argue that trade inbalance with China is ok. On a side note I can't stand Graham.

So long as buying shit they don't need (most of which comes from China) remains the opiate of the middle and low class masses AND American manufacturing digs their heels in to the lowest denominator on wages we are stuck here. Good luck on either of those. We have a consumption addiction. Tariffs won't fix that. We'll just find something else from another cheap dealer to consume.

You're just squeezing the trade imbalance for those goods to other countries, some of which have much lesser protections for labor and the environment than even China has in force.

So you'd also ban the coal and firearms industries and have Trump be a champion of international human rights?

As a minimalist I agree, although there is no cheaper deal3r thàt can supply the mass quantity of total junk and disposable goods as China.
