If I buy a cheap puter from say Wal-mart with the Lindows OS loaded, is it possible to reformat and put a Windows OS on it instead? I'm looking for a cheap solution for my daughter. Thanks.

That's good to know. I seen a Lindow system at Tiger Direct for 199.00 and thought it would be perfect for my 6 year old girl for Christmas. (7 in Jan.)

i wonder if the drivers on the CD come with chipset drivers for MS OSes or if you can download them. Or if they are natively supported.

replace it with a actual Linux OS. Kids do well in that OS. (I remember back to my dos days with having to look up commands in that big blue book, better then He-man, but still not quite as cool as GI Joe) Try a few different things on it... Even try out lindows (shudder).. if she want's windows you can go ahead and buy a OS for her later.

I recently installed RedHat 9.0 on my second hard drive and I have to tell you, it is very nice and easy to install. Comes with Open Office which has word processor, spreadsheet, presentation like Power Point and so many other good staff. I got it from one of their mirror sites here:

What exactly is wrong with lindows?

It might be the very best thing to happen to linux. Maybe it will help bring linux more mainstream.

The only really "bad" thing I can think about is you have to download almost EVERYTHING, since only the basic OS & 'net browser installs off the CD.

Why a Windows OS? Download something easy like Lycoris Desktop/LX or Mandrake and put it on that computer. Heck, I hear the latest version of Lindows is not that bad either, problem is, you have to DOWNLOAD everything you want to use!

You have to pay for it...thats what wrong. Plus debian or anyother linux distro will kick its @$$ all day long.

so ya gotta pay for it?
thats it?
you have to dl apps?

Debian is not really friendly to the novice user, think of lindows as training wheels to get someone started that otherwise might not consider anything but windows.

Maybe after a year of using lindows they will step into mandrake or some other dist.

The first year of "click n run" is free, so you really don't have to pay, considering you can get a whole crapload of software downloaded over the course of a year.

I have no respect for lindows, just because they seem like a horrible gimmick. The "innovative" linux companies have the absolute worst marketing. Lindows? Lycoris Deskop/LX? WTF kind of names are those?

But as an actual piece of software (politics and marketing aside), lindows doesn't seem all that bad. You get well supported software for a decent price, and you also have debian's apt underneath if you feel like being "hardcore." But of course any nerd is going to shun it since being hardcore is cool ;)

Yes... just watch out for low-quality hardware. I assume she isn't going to be playing games... if she is, you will really want another solution.
