Or rather some variation of it.
Link

Now Lindows.com is offering system builders something more. It calls it RevShare. The idea is that system builders also get to collect up to 20% of the profits from the software and services. So, if the system builder sells a LindowsOS PC to one of its customers and that customer then buys StarOffice from Lindows.com, the system builder gets a cut.

I should probably point out that I think this is a horrible idea.

Also, didn't they pull support for Windows apps? The biggest think about Lindows was that you could run Windows applications on it..

IT'S NOT A PYRAMID SCHEME. IT'S CALLED NETWORK MARKETING and as Lindows has implemented is PERFECTLY legal.

Are you anti network marketing morons totally against people making money?? do you imagine that other forms of marketing don't entail profits?

Its not even really bona fide network marketing. Its just your standard second tier revenue sharing, as practiced in a multitude of industries.

But yeah, its not a pyramid scheme as long as a tangible product or service is being exchanged for money. A pyramid scheme is an investment scheme where early investors are paid returns solely from the contributions of later investors.

For details about a text book pyramid scheme, indeed the largest pyramid scheme ever devised, please contact the Social Security Administration.

Never thought about it like that...and man you are correct, seeing as how we are all going to get boned in the deal.

Mp3.com was a crappy cheapo website. And Lindows is a crappy cheapo OS.

Makes me wonder about anything Micheal Robertson is involved in.

Hu? I said it was some variation of a pyramid scheme and it's very risky, just like pyramid schemes. After a few years, companies start depending on their customers purchasing software so they can get their 20%. Customers stop, and the company starts going under. It's a variation. Call it what you want, it's still a variation of a pyramid scheme.

Only if Lindows eliminates the $500 per year licensing/distribution fee and depends entirely upon end-user upsells for its sole source of revenue, which it has no plans to do. No upsell, no revenue sharing. No accounts receivable, no accounts payable.

Its not even remotely in the same galaxy as a pyramid scheme.

i give up. let them think what they want to. they will anyway.

xzeroII until you know what a pyramid scheme is don't go calling things pyramid schemes.

tscenter. hey, amway is network marketing, and in my opinion, it is a legitimate marketing plan. sure it can be abused but you can't deny legitimacy just because something can be abused. name one thing that CAN'T be abuse. it isn't there.

it really gets to me when people go off about pyramid scheme w/o having the faintest idea what it is.

It's not even a VARIATION. unless you call all forms of commision a variation of Pyramid Scheme which is of course LUDICROUS. also, it can't be a VARIATION of a pyramid scheme when by DEFINITION a PYRAMID scheme is an ILLEGAL variant of Network marketing.

Get it thru your thick skull. it has NOTHING in common with Pyramid schemes because YOU ARE SELLING A PRODUCT.

For the purposes of this Law, the term "pyramid sales scheme" refers to a plan or organization designed for merchandise or service propagation or sales, the participants in which can obtain, for a certain consideration, the rights of promoting or selling merchandise or services, as well as the right to introduce new participants, thereby obtaining commissions, bonuses or other economic benefits.
The "certain consideration" referred to in the preceding paragraph shall be an amount of money, a purchase of merchandise, a contribution of labor, or the incurrence of obligations.

By the way you presented this definition any Reseller, Dealer, Commisioned Sales Person would all be a Variant of the Pyramid Scheme, BUT they AREN'T all those existed before the so called PYRAMID SCHEME, the idea of send me and everyone on this list $5.00 and we will make you rich. and they send you a form letter that you then send to 10 of your friends who do the same thing. THAT'S a pyramid scheme, where you fleece money for NOTHING. IF you are selling a legitimate product EVEN if you use NETWORK marketing, it is NOT considered PYRAMID.

What you described for Lindows is done by almost EVERY major manufacturer. they are known as referral fees, commisions, bonuses, whatever but they are NOT PYRAMID.

I admit when I am wrong when evidence is presented the refutes what I believe in. The definition of a pyramid scheme isn't whatever you think it should be. It's right there. It doesn't matter if tons of people are doing it. Use facts to justify your position, not crap you pull out of the air. What they are doing fits the description of a pyramid scheme pretty close. That's why I call it a variation, because it's not exactly a pyramid scheme. Look at the facts presented to you, not what mommy told you.

did you even bother to click his link first??

It was a link from Taiwan. i've got nothing against Taiwan, but i'll take the definition of the US SEC before i'd accept the definition by Taiwan since i live in the US. i'm more concerned about the law here than there. call me stubborn but that's the way I am.

It's more like a commision than anything.
Its exactly like a commission.

That's some person's definition of a pyramid scheme, it isn't remotely one that is accepted or common. See the SEC link for the ACCEPTED definition of a pyramid scheme. A Ponzi Scheme is a type of pyramid scheme. Direct sales commission is not a type of pyramid scheme.

A Pyramid Scheme is an illegitimate "variation" of multi-level or network marketing. Legitimate multi-level or network marketing isn't a Pyramid Scheme. By definition the word "scheme" necessarily involves a deceptive, illegitimate, or fraudulent practice. This isn't occuring in the Lindows model, its simply a single-level direct commission flowing from an actual sale.

No multiple level commissions = no multi-level or network marketing. No multi-level or network marketing = no pyramid scheme. Not even a "variation", however loosely defined.
