Vegas Casino Boots Singer Linda Ronstadt

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Singer Linda Ronstadt not only got booed, she got the boot after lauding filmmaker Michael Moore and his new movie, Fahrenheit 9/11 during a performance at the Aladdin hotel-casino.

Before singing "Desperado" for an encore Saturday night, the 58-year-old rocker called Moore a "great American patriot" and "someone who is spreading the truth." She also encouraged everybody to see the documentary about President Bush.

Ronstadt's comments drew loud boos and some of the 4,500 people in attendance stormed out of the theater. People also tore down concert posters and tossed cocktails into the air.

"It was a very ugly scene," Aladdin President Bill Timmins told The Associated Press. "She praised him and all of a sudden all bedlam broke loose."

Timmins, who is British and was watching the show, decided Ronstadt had to go - for good. Timmins said he didn't allow Ronstadt back in her luxury suite and she was escorted off the property.

Ronstadt's antics "spoiled a wonderful evening for our guests and we had to do something about it," Timmins said.

Timmins said it was the first time he sent a performer packing.

"As long as I'm here, she's not going to play," Timmins said.

Ronstadt had been booked to play the Aladdin for only one show.

Calls to Ronstadt's manager were not immediately returned.

In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal before the show, Ronstadt said "I keep hoping that if I'm annoying enough to them, they won't hire me back."

Looks like she got her wish.

Just shut up and sing!

Linda Ronstadt is hardly a "rock and roll" concert 😉

Uh, Linda Ronstadt is NOT rock and roll.

I have this nightmare image in my mind of overweight, mid-50's Republicans sporting the full Cleveland look (white belt, white shoes) and tons of gold chains running amok on the Las Vegas strip.

Probably the publicity is worth more to Ronstadt than the suite the promoter stiffed her on.

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!

I agree with everything she said but, hey, she is basically a washed singer who people only see out of nostalgia. Is she 70's or 80's? I dont know but if you are living off your past fame then give the audience what they want. Also, I still blame her for screwing up Jerry Brown's career. An oddball but very brilliant man.

eh, I'm not too surprised. The same would probably happen if she shouted "God Bless Bush" a couple times. Its apathy thats keeping us from constantly grabbing each others' necks nowdays

Why do you blame her? He should have married her.

What kind of Moron would pay good money to see a washed up act like Ronstad?

Oh, only Bush supporters were in the audience? Was the concert part of a Bush campaign bus stop?

BTW, who are "you lefties"?

Dude, cut it out. As was mentioned in the Slim-Fast thread, public figures on both sides of the tables have faced significant backlash from making politically-charged (or percieved as such) comments that offended their audience. I agree that the actions of the crowd were pretty unfortunate, and that simple booing and complaints could have accomplished their purpose without going nuts, but over-the-top mob responses to comments that offend them are not a uniquely one-sided occurrence. The real message is just that apolitical public figures using their celebrity status as a bully pulpit in an apolitical forum tends to piss people off, regardless of affiliation. The audience did not like having their concert turned into a political affair, and responded with their dissatisfaction. Again, this happens on both sides; for example, Dick Cheney got a lot of flack for criticizing Kerry during a speech at Westminster College, which resulted in a group of FSU students petitioning that he not discuss politics when he talked at their graduation. This is NOT a one-sided affair; stop trying to pretend that it is.

Maybe it's just a hunch, but I imagine the next time a conservative public figure makes a dumb political remark and gets hung out to dry for it, we won't see your typical condescending potshots against the people who complain.

In regards to the crowd acting stupid.... A bunch of idiots. Kind of like the idiots who riot when their sports team loses (or wins in some cases).

What I find funny is that there are so many people in an uproar about the Casino President escorting her out/off premise..... Yeah, she has the right to free speech but the Casino has the right to not allow some speech on their private property. I am also willing to bet that she was aware that she wasn't supposed to broach the subject of politics.
In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal before the show, Ronstadt said "I keep hoping that if I'm annoying enough to them, they won't hire me back."

Sounds like she knew what she was doing.

I don't blame the Casino President either. This is a family show atmosphere and is supposed to be a relaxing pleasure. There is nothing relaxing or enjoyable about listening to someone spew their political beliefs after paying for a ticket to listen to their music. I wouldn't want to listen to any musician hammer either party if I am paying the price of a ticket to listen to their music. If I am purchasing a ticket to attend a political affair... that's another story all together.

Another thing is that many public/private arena's have very stiff rules about advertising non related items (like the movie). There are also many public/private arena's that have rules against political statements since they could be forced to give equal time to the "counter view".

Bingo!

The important thing is that people know that any criticism of the administration will carry a high price. It's only a free country figuratively, not literally. For the right to speak you have to risk self destruction. No way the devil's gonna get a free ride criticizing God. These people would spit on our troops coming back from Iraq is they protested the war.
