Limits on Upgradability?

Greetings, all!

So, I have a new 24" monitor, and want a new graphics card for 1920x1200 gaming. However, my current PSU couldn't handle much of an upgrade, so I'll need a new one of those, too. I'm pretty familiar with the standards by which I should consider new PSUs; my question is this:

Are there any compatibility issues I should be aware of or consider when upgrading the PSU on an older system?

Thanks!

Some older mobos need heftier +5V rails while more current mobos don't need too much +5 but more on the +12. Also older mobos have 20-pin ATX connectors and many newer PSUs have 24 pin or 20+4 pin. It will be good to have some room off the necessary end of the mobo connector to let the extra pins hang over - I don't like to break/detach the extra pins off unless absolutely necessary and I don't like to use adapters in high current lines.
