Limiting factor of programs

I have a program that is limited by hard drive speed. How do I tell what portions of the hard drive are the limiting factor?

For instance at www.storagereview.com they have a dozen different benchmark tools they use. A buddy of mine told me the program I'm using is io-bound. How exactly do you figure something like that out.
