I wanted to hook up my friends laptop to my cable modem but I get a limited or no connection error on the computer. What should I do i'm running winxp pro. My friend also had the same issue.

why can't I use a standard cat 5 cable? besides my friend had his cable hooked up and had the same problem but the tech fixed it for him

Have you tried power-cycling the cable modem when hooking up the laptop to it? Some cable modems will only communicate with one device (PC or router) at a time, based on the first MAC address it sees after it's powered on.

JW310 nailed it. Power cycle it between devices, or change so the mac's match (but that can mess up the LAN if you both plug into it)
