Limitations of the Netgear ME102 WAP

With its latest firmware update, the ME102 added a bunch of options, e.g. according to its software menus, besides configuring it as an access point, you could configure it as an access point client, a point to point bridge, or a point to multipoint bridge. Documentation on these new features is non-existent. I have finally figured out why. I got this email from Netgear Tech support:

The option "Access Point Client" is to configure the ME102 as the wireless bridge using the MAC address of the other ME102 in place of 0's but currently this option is not working. You can not connect two ME102 wirelessly to create a wireless bridge. We are working on the problem and apologize for the inconvenience.

So, much as I like Netgear, I have to grudgingly admit that, for the moment at least, Linksys and maybe other brands of WAPs have a better feature set. You may never need the added options, but if you do, the ME102 does not currently offer them, despite what its software menus say.

hmm thats odd, from Netgear's tech support site it says:

ME102 Firmware Upgrade Ver. 1.4h3

Explanation:
ME102 software upgrade (Version 1.4h3) allows 128 bit WEP encryption and bridging functions.
This software release upgrade the ME102 Access Point to allow for the following functions:

Support 128-bit WEP Encryption
Support wireless bridge functions: Point-to-Point and Point-to-MultiPoint
Support Access Point Client feature
Support MAC Address Control

It specifically says it supports it... I wonder why there is conflicting information.

I love netgear too. I've been using their products for years, including this particular one.

Good point. Maybe tech support is in the dark. Or, maybe they thought it would work, but then found out it didn't. I think I'll email them back on this. They should change their web page if it isn't right.
