Limit on nested quotes?

I'm not sure what the forum software is capable of doing, but it occurs to me that if there is some way to set a limit on how "deep" nested quotes are allowed to show up, that might clean things up quite a bit in those longer threads.

I just don't see any reason for quotes to nest more than 1 or 2-deep. It's great that we are able to quote other people so that readers can tell what we're responding to, but it gets to the point where the entire thread is encapsulated in every single post.

1- or 2-deep would allow people to read someone's post, see the post they're quoting, and maybe see what prompted that post. Beyond that would be diminishing returns.

Again, I don't know what the software allows, but I just thought I'd throw that out there. Thanks!

Bumpity. This seems especially prevalent in the Social forums. Could you set it not to nest quotes at all, and only quote the person you reply to? Making your own is easy enough if someone is has a good reason to quote more.

if it really gets out of hand, report the thread to anandtech moderator.

It's a pretty weak reason to report someone. The practice is annoying, but not offensive.

On a related note, the forums could use an internal method for reporting things. As far as I can tell, e-mailing the moderation address is the only way to do this, and I had to hunt around just to find that. :-/

But mods can't do anything about it unless we know and we can't check every thread. Furthermore, by the time we do get to it things often get out of hand.

Also, there was a notify mod button but it was disabled due to abuse. The current way to notify is via PM or email. PM probably gets a faster response.

Just add AnandTech Moderator to your buddy list for easy access.

Two deep is pretty sufficient really. I'm going to have to play with atforums.mobi and see if I can write a function to do this there.

Yeah other forums I frequent have it set up so you can hit a "quote" button on several posts, then hit "reply" and you will see the markup for just what those posters wrote themselves. The nested quotes are ignored.
