I'm not sure what the forum software is capable of doing, but it occurs to me that if there is some way to set a limit on how "deep" nested quotes are allowed to show up, that might clean things up quite a bit in those longer threads.
I just don't see any reason for quotes to nest more than 1 or 2-deep. It's great that we are able to quote other people so that readers can tell what we're responding to, but it gets to the point where the entire thread is encapsulated in every single post.
1- or 2-deep would allow people to read someone's post, see the post they're quoting, and maybe see what prompted that post. Beyond that would be diminishing returns.
