LILO vs NT Boot Loader...

CP

I'm about to install Linux on my existing system which already has the Win2k Pro & Win2k AdvS (dual boot) installed. Should I use LILO or the existing NT bootloader? What is the pros and cons?

Many Thanks...

Where as I find LILO makes more sense. My response was definitely legitimate 😉

Thanks for your prompt reply. Now i'm going to install linux on top of Win2k Pro and Win2k AdvS. My hdd has two partitions for each window, how should i re-partition my hdd for linux? 3 partitions for Win2k Pro, Win2k AdvS and Linux respectively?

If i let LILO to be the boot manager, will that be any problem if i uninstall the linux in future and want my system to boot properly with NT boot loader? I remembered someone mentioned should avoid installing the LILO on MBR am I right? How to avoid that from happening then?

Any help in advance will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

If you're going to install Linux you'll need to make free space on the drive somewhere.
If you're going to use the NT bootloader install LILO on the "/" partition rather than the MBR. There's a dual boot FAQ in the FAQ section of the main site that gives step by step instructions. Since you've already got a dual boot going with NTLDR I'd continue to use it.
If you install LILO on the MBR you'll need to run FIXMBR from the W2K recovery console to get the W2K back.

Something to consider:

No Microsoft OS will ask you about the boot loader. It will just install its own. Now, I've booted up to 6 OSes on the same hard drive. Thankfully, most other OSes play nice, so I just let MS have the MBR and add my other OSes to it. Besides, I feel that NT Loader give you the most instant access to your OS selection (no more than 2 selections, but up to 3 with LILO on the MBR).

Add non-MS OSes to the NT loader with BootPart. www.winimage.com => bootpart.htm (may have to search Google as the WinImage site was acting weird last week). Just be sure to install LILO on the partition that contains /boot.
