LILO stops at L

I just installed Red Hat 7 and when this box is starting to load the OS LILO stops and hangs at the letter L, I am a Linux newbie and don't know what's wrong, I know some of you do.

I am also a linux newbie but have had a similar problem. When i first installed linux 6.1 it would get to lilo and only say LI... The answer i got was that the kernel was mis-installed or something... the fix i got was to fdisk /mbr. Did u have any MS OS on the drive b4 u install redhat? If so, the MS OS's hog up the drive and need to be /mbr'd to fully get rid of or installed after linux for dual boot. It worked for me, but i'm not sure that everything i've said is right.

Techwhore no there isn't any other OS on the HDD, this is a dedicated Linux box, also I will try the link Damaged, thanks.

It simply explains the error codes that LILO can generate. I would like to know what they are so I can help.

Thanks.

Damaged, the link you posted states that if LILO stops at the L and the error code is "The two-digit error codes indicate the type of problem" but there isn't any error code.

That's kind of a bummer.

What's your setup like? Mostly I'm interested in drive size and location of partitions and drive controllers (aka ATA 66, Promise Ultra, etc.)

Damaged, my drive is a standard Maxtor 8GB IDE HDD, there aren't any drive controllers. This drive has no partitions on it other than those created by the RedHat installer, I let it do all the work and formatting.

Hmm, that should be no problems there then.

Is it setup correctly in the BIOS? I mean is is LBA and not normal? That could be a problem. You'd have to change it and reinstall though.

Did you make a boot disk? Can you boot with it? You have the CD so you can boot with that as a rescue disk as well if you have to.

In all honesty it sounds like something with the install did not go correctly, you may want to just try it again.

Actually you're more likely to get LI when that's the case. Not just the L like he's/she's getting. More than likely I say, not impossible though.

He/she only has an 8GB drive and my guess would be that the kernel is not resideing above the 1023rd cylinder, though, again, it's not impossible. It's certainly possible if the user is using normal instead of LBA though.

Lastly, he/she using RH 7. I have't used it, but I would think that they'd include the latest version of LILO in that release and then the 1024 problem is solved. 🙂

Maybe I'll go back to Mandrake, I just wanted the newest relase of the Kernel and Rhat7 has it and I don't know to compile so I just did a complete install over a formatted HDD that was running Mandrake, Oh and I am a he.

Grab Mandrake 7.2 then. It is out from what I understand. I've recently moved from Mandrake to Debian and am really liking it.
