lil upgrade help?

hey guys, havent been paying attention to vid card, etc. news lately so i was wondering if i could get your opinions on some upgrades im thinking about doing...

i have :
CPU: AMD XP1800+ 1530MHz
Motherboard: Epox 8k3a+ rev 1.0
Memory: 512 MB of Crucial Pc2100
Video Card: Visiontek Ti 4200 Geforce 4

i am thinking of upgrading my video card (maybe cpu as well) so I can play half life 2,etc (if its even possible??), cause far cry doesnt run very well on my comp with the ti4200. as far as my vid card, i dont really want to spend more than 200 dollars, and from what i can gather the 8k3a+ can only take up to a xp 2600+ ( i think) so, i dont think the gains from that would be much. same with upgrading ram to 1 gb...

i am looking at maybe getting a radein pro 128 or maybe a geforce 6800.

thanks!

I just ordered a Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB for $140 at Newegg. I heard ytou can get a 8800 Pro w/ 128MB for ~ $190

isn't a 9600 with 256mb of ram sorta stupid? I mean they don't have a 256bit interface to work with the added ram so it would seem sort of pointless to pay more for it....

please correct me if i'm wrong

yes, it is pointless.
The best upgrade for you would most likely be updating the processor to a Mobile Barton, such as the 2400+. They're easily overclockable, and your processor performance will go way up without having to buy a new motherboard. (they have a 266 FSB). You might also want to look into getting a 9600 pro-you can get one for 100$ at NewEgg, and it's a nice upgrade over your current card for a low price. Another 512mb of RAM would be a good idea, too.

It certianly could'nt hurt. 512mb per processor is a minimum for SMP machines, or so I've heard.
Getting a 6800 would be pointless, though. Your system is'nt fast enough to take advantage of the graphics power.
