Finally getting around to making my website, there will be forums, many more links/pages, but what I have now is a basic layout of the final product. The unix notes section is for a class I took for reference at school so you can kinda ignore that ;) . So do you like the color scheme/layout? I tried to make it simple and easy to navigate, check it out:

Thanks for your feedback!

maybe add another color to the blue/white. colors are too.. dry?

What's with all these people asking ATOT to critique their websites?

Oh, and your site's not XHTML 1.0 compliant, so take the button off there. Other than that, the color scheme is pretty harsh, the content is pretty lacking, and the aesthetic appeal is pretty dumpy.

Cheer up - I used to be just like you. But then I learned that less is more (less counters, less animated gifs, less funky javascript menu highlights, etc.). My site is in my sig. :)

hEY, i'm a brand new "web designer" (in quotes because I don't feel qualified to call myself that yet) as well! I think your problem is that you're working backwards.. I used to do the same exact thing - instead of planning out everything ahead of time I'd just jump in and learn all the new tricks I could and used them (funky flash menus, blinky things, etc.).. Instead, your best allie in web design (amateur level, I can't speak for pros) is a pen and paper.. Do a mock up on paper, get the catagories down and screw around with looks, colors, etc... Let your content dictate the page elements - what purpose does the highlight java effect really serve? If I was working with lots of financial data or grid I would consider it, other wise it's showy and kinda dated (hence the "welcome to 1995" comments).. Think about what you want to say and then say it as simply as possible.. of course, i suck at this and am trying my best to figure things out myself..
peace and good luck

you need dreamweaver or flash mx, no one codes html "by hand" anymore. try looking at university websites for ideas. they tend to be a mix between good design and presentation of information. (www.ucla.edu, www.harvard.edu). there are sites that look better, but some tend to be tough to navifate.

I also gotta add that the color scheme did literally give me a headache.. there are a few combinations that you just can't use.. I'm in media studies and film so we're taught that we just can't use pinks or bright blues on television (bright blues are only used for chroma keying) - they drive people crazy... I would imagine that the same applies to web design..

Woah there big guy...I've never used Dreamweaver or Flash. Personally, I dislike Macromedia products. The only thing I use to code my site is Notepad (and I'm THINKING of using an HTML editor).

It is nice to learn it with notepad, I think we all did to learn the fundamentals, but then it just gets too time consuming. Ii like dreamweaver myself, but there are a few other good html coding programs floating around for free.

Keep up the practice sites, you will eventually realize what works and what doesn't.

Your site is nice and clean, but this guy clearly wants a site that looks good and thats why he is asking us. Macromedia products are great because they integrate a very nice html editor with a graphical interface. I have worked at companies where i designed sites with bare HTML and where I used Macromedia Studio and there is no comparison in capability.
