Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good lightweight notebook (hopefully under 4.5 lbs) that is under $1400. Thanks for any info.

Check the S-Series or P-Series by Fujitsu. I have the S Series and it's great. I am a student and haul it around all day.

Wait for notebooks based on the Centrino platform from Intel... either that or buy an iBook :)

I own a P-Series & I love it...it does have a combo DVD-ROM drive. They are well made in Osaka, Japan.

So if you have a service or repair...where do you send it?

..how is their warranty?

I either want a P2000 or an S series ...prices are competitive..and I am thinking about more the S series..

Go to their website 4 any more info...1yr warranty, service done in some authorized repair shops around the US, or it gets mailed back to Fujitsu(in Calif).

I would personally look to Apple for a notebook. Comparable prices on the iBooks to what you can find on the PC side and they look damn cool. Unless you're going to replace your desktop with it the iBook can do anything you want it to.

Well I found a Sharp PC-UM10M with 256 MB of memory and a free external CD Drive for $1100 at a local store. I think I'm going to go for that since all my girlfriend needs it for is writing papers. Its less than three pounds which is really great and its a great price. Has anybody heard anything about Sharp notebooks?

Thanks for all of the responses so far.

Unfortunately she can't go for the iBook since she needs to take tests with it so PC only.

If you want to stick to a windows based laptop then I recommend SONY.

I use a SONY VAIO PCG-SR1K and it's amazing.

It's a little old now but the new models from SONY are even better.

Weight is no issue (the C1x series is 1.05kg!), the battery life is one of the longest of any machines in it's class thanks to clever component choice and the feature set follows the Apple philosophy of computer design.

As for service? Not sure about in the rest of the world but in the UK they rank in the top 2 for both service and reliability (reliability being VERY important if you're on the move and don't know where the local supplier is in Outer Mongolia!)

The cost is good and I'd say only IBM build more robust machines (except maybe the Panasonic toughbook but they weigh a little too much and power is sacrificed)
