lightscribe questions (not a star wars topic)

does anybody here have any info on when is lightscribe coming out. the official site says jan 2005 but it also said end of summer 2004 a few months ago.

i know verbatim are going to make lightscribe compatible media, but who is going to make the drives?
i have my eye on the nd-3500a but it doesn't support lightscribe and seeing how nec recently released nd-3520a (which doesn't support lightscribe either), i don't think they will have a drive supporting the technology soon.

i was just about to buy a dvd burner back in february when i read about lilghtscribe and i have been waiting for it ever since 🙁.

oohhhh a cookie :cookie:😛

just found that hp are selling a pc that has a lightscribe drive. at time of writing this, they are not selling the drive itself :frown:.

that sounds good... not too sure about philips but i know benq make decent (and reasonably priced) dvd recorders

its all relative. if you have text only or smaller images you can burn it faster... but not as fast as 30 secs 🙁

They're available now (to my surprise) even though everywhere I looked online they show as being not available yet or backordered. I picked up the HP 640i internal from Walmart in Lansing, MI for $99 on the weekend..

I too picked one up at Walmart this past weekend, in New Jersey, for $99. Found Verbatim Lightscribe CDRs at CompUSA and Best Buy, but was not able to find DVD media at either Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, Staples, Office Max or CompUSA. Any suggestions where I can find DVD media?

topspd and jjsbasmt, i hope you realise that you are buyng a hp dvd burner. hp! and if rumours are correct these burners might actually be just rebranded lite-ons which i'm not sure if it is even worse or equally bad...

my recommendation... don't be an early adopter or wait for the benq 1625 atleast (should be available by end of march).

i wanted to buy a burner february last year, have waited so much time and still am not desperate enough to buy a lite-on/hp

Pics of a disc that has been lightscribed? Curious to see how this looks. Is the media reasonably priced?

Quick some what off topic question

What is wrong with lite-on?
I have 2 of their DVD burners and and a DVD-ROM and they all work great.

In reference to the Lite On drives: I have the external model 812SX and I have been pleased with it. I understand that Lite On It is one of the very biggest Optical drive producers in the world. I'm sure they make drives for a lrge number of companies to rebrand. As for the LightScribe CDs I haven't burned one yet however the price is of a premium nature. The Verbatim 10 pk spindles were 7.99 and the 30 pk spindle was 19.99. I have seen a friends burner do a nice label job, and of course the label burning is slow set at best quality. I am making the switch from a Casio label maker that uses the thermal imaging process, which still entails purchasing ribbons, and dealing with the fact that the labeler is somewhat particular on what type of surface it prints on. So I expect that once I find Lightscribe DVD media I will be able to print a more "professional" looking label on the few DVDs and CDs that I burn. My other DVD burner is a Benq 16X DL capable. I burned my first DL DVD last week with with no errors on Verbatim media albeit at about $10 a pop per disc.

lite on dvd-roms are good albeit noisy. lite on dvd-rw drives usually are considered bad because of low burning quality. its all about quality see. and anyway, why would you even want to look at a lite on (even if you forgot about the burn quality issues) when you have alternatives like nec 3520 (3540 soon), pioneer dvr-109, benq 1620 (and hopefully 1625 soon), lg gsa 4163, ....

LiteOn has always been a very good quality manufacturer. Where are you getting this information??

I would get lightscribe (which is just an advancement of t@too from years back) if it didn't take 20 minutes just to burn the label, and if they were darker, and if they were in color, and if the disks were available and the disks were cheap, and if the burn quality of the hp drives was better.

i just read some reviews... that's all... but look at it this way.. the drives i mentioned above are better than the lite-on. the lg gsa 4163 can burn dvd-ram for example. i know most ppl don't care about that but it's there and it doesn't cost much. even if lite-ons are not as bad as i make them, you can't deny the fact that other drives are simply better. lite-on might be the fastest but that's about it (correct me if i'm wrong).

soon (after more ls media are available) there will be 2x ls media which would be all chemical so no need to upgrade drive.
darker labels are achieved by burning the same label twice (can even add more stuff to the previous) which would double the labeling time but the option is there.
research is on the way for color (no dates).
dvd media will always lag behind... look at dual layer...
benq 1625 should be out soon.
benq 1625 review: http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/print.php?cid=29&id=1458
i've said it before:
lightscribe technology is plagued by the same problems of any other just released product
