Lightroom 5 discount.

No. Just no. The free stuff sucks.

Ok I'm going to elaborate on this comment. Free stuff doesn't suck and you can do a lot with it, HOWEVER, it comes with a lot of compromise with your workflow and every image from raw to finished product takes 5-10 times longer than necessary. Also, many tools aren't as refined as they could be making some things harder than necessary.

Bottom line, you can get by with free stuff for the most part but its a huge compromise. It's like cutting down trees with an axe. You can get it done, but if you have to cut down more than a couple of trees it's worth getting a chainsaw. Lightroom is that chainsaw. 🙂

I shot over 900 raw images on my last trip to Orlando. I shutter to think how long it would have taken to process them on if I had to import, process, and export them individually without lightroom to help with the workflow.

:awe:

Anyway, how often are major versions of this software released? I'm curious if I bought this now, how long would I have the latest version?

There is a major release every 1-2 years on average. Full price is $150 but they almost always offer a substancial discount to people who come from earlier versions, which is $80 right now. Version 5 just came out so if you get it now you can ride out the entire cycle.

You don't necessarily have to upgrade every time though.

Only for people who need professional processing. I can get by with cheap and free software.

And pro's wouldnt wait for a sale I should think.

Which one? Only semi-good one I know of is DPP that comes with canon. Raw Therapee produces much more noiser pics than DPP, albiet more controls.

I'm still using 4.4 and can't see anything in 5 that makes me want to upgrade. 4 introduced better highlight/shadow recovery, CA removal tool and soft proofing which were useful, but 5's new features are kind of meh.

5 is quicker than 4.x, and the radial filter is quite useful beside the standard graduated filter.
