All Best Buys received notice over our internal network that we are to IMMEDIATELY rush HL2 to the shelves for sale. Lightning does strike twice (referring to my doom iii adventure), I am installing it now...
WOhooooo!

This is fuggin sick. I'm hearing about this everywhere now. Steam should unlock all Steam-sold copies and keep retail copies locked till the 16th (and I'm dead serious here)... I've heard that Valve vowed to unlock early if the street date was broken, and it's not that I want the game early (but of course I do), but rather that it looks like VU is fvcking around some more.

Yes, but there's been talk that Valve put out a warning that if VU or any stores violated the release date they would unlock.

Scan the reciept of the purchase, post it here, then email it to gabe so he can unlock it for those of us that hate VU and bought it through steam to better support Valve

Dude, look at the Steampowered forums, there's plenty of sh!t like that going on there. This isn't an isolated incident.

Its doctored! I want a poloroid with a picture of HL2 and today's paper or I won't believe it!

Actually I don't care if it gets released today or the 16th, though the weekend would be more convenient.

hehe I relize your being a bit sarcastic, but its not doctored, TONS of people have been buying it at a select few Best Buy's since last Thursday.

collectors edition is dvd. Anyway, even if you buy it from retail, don't you still have to activate via steam? Or is that just for multiplayer?

You have to activate all versions through Steam, retail or no, even if you just want to play HL2 single player.
So no one can play until Valve starts letting Steam unlock games, they have the ultimate control over when we can play.
(You can play CS: Source already though, but nothing else, eg: HL2, DoD: Source etc).

So if I went about bougt the game and wanted to play it right now I wouldn't be able to?

Valve just lost a customer.

ITs not Valve fault that the companies are selling the game ealier than dictated. If you're going to be unpset, be upset at the company that (would have) sold you the game.

Yea. Sorta like "We have it, nobody else does!" and people don't know about Steam.

Of course don't tell people they cannot play until they activate on the 16th either.

Meh I say it's all good. I am generally fine about it as long as I can grab a copy sometime this week. Not like Doom 3 where the day it came out, EB games only had 25 copies. I say the online authentification/unlock thing is pretty clever as it is a safeguard to even retailers that decide to sell it early.

Best Buy probably did it as they started to realize they would be undercut by steam, damn, i threw away my multifunction printer or I would email gabe a copy of receipt, if I was still at work I may have sent him a copy of our memo to release it.
