WESTMINSTER, Colo. - A motorcyclist died after he was struck by lightning while riding in rush hour traffic between Denver and Boulder, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing a flash of light shortly before the motorcyclist struck the center divider on U.S. 36 Wednesday, police spokesman Tim Read said.

Gary Missi, 46, of Longmont was pronounced dead at the scene.

A coroner's investigation was under way to determine whether the lightning bolt, the collision or something else caused his death, Read said.

The lightning blasted a 4-inch-deep hole in the highway and sent chunks of asphalt hurtling across the highway.

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - A child-welfare worker was clocked at 142 miles an hour on his motorcycle while leading police on a two-state chase, authorities said Thursday.

Sean Virgo's wild ride allegedly started in Orangeburg, where he was pursued by New York state police.

When he arrived in neighboring New Jersey, Palisades Interstate Parkway police picked up the chase, They arrested Virgo as he tried to make a U-turn on a grassy median.

Virgo, 34, of Ossining, an emergency children's services investigator for the New York City Administration for Children's Services, was charged this week with eluding police and first-degree reckless endangerment.

He was being held on $20,000 bail in the Bergen County jail in New Jersey.

I'm surprised the lightning bolt would have struck his motorcycle instead of a nearby light pole of sorts.

I"d say he probably was blinded by the light and maybe a piece of asphalt whacked him in the head pretty hard.

I remember reading a story about a cross country bicyclist that was going over the brooklyn bridge and lightning hit him/his bike/the bridge and exploded a portable stove fuel container in his saddlebags. The explosion left a small crater in the asphalt. IRC the guy lived, but was rather incapacitated for a while and his bike was toast. IRC the story would have been published in Bicylcing Magazine, back in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

cheers
