Lighters? (new post, is all wick fuel the same?)

I don't smoke but I want to keep a lighter with me because.. well fire is useful. Plus it's fireworks season. Are butane lighters good? I got a Ronson POS with a wick from Randalls.. pretty resistant to wind but the flame goes everywhere and burns me 🙁. Generally, is butane better than a wick and oil? I've seen ads in Popular Mechanics for lighters with a blow torch like flame. Are all butane lighters like that? Does the flame stay lit in wind and fire in any direction?

Edit: Is it okay to use Ronsonol brand fuel in a Zippo lighter? On the bottle it says "Contents: Naphtha".

I'm looking at the Zippo site and their flash crap is driving me crazy. I can't even get to a product list, or some info about butane vs oil (I know they sell both because I saw the fuel and wick section).

ZIPPO! wick and fuel type. Butane lighters are suck. They are dangerous. Little bombs in your pocket waiting to go off. Throw a Bic into a fire and wee what happens! A friend of mine had major burns over his left thigh from one that let loose in his pocket. (Of course he was welding at the time and forgot to empty his pockets...)

Zippos are overrated. I bought a nice butane torch lighter from a cigar shop about a year and a half ago. Been working flawlessly, and lights things much better than a Zippo.

Plus, when lighting cigars I don't get that gross kerosene taste.

Hmm, I never look at them in "chain" stores. Usually you find them in smoke shops (duh) and stores of the like. Hot Topic might carry them. I know they carry some knockoffs. Just wander around your local mall, you're sure to run across at least one store.

I have a Zippo even though I've never smoked anything in my life. Gotta have it at those concerts🙂

I like the smell of kerosene. I grew up around kerosene lamps. Power goes out quite often in Trinidad.

Zippo's suck.

Just get a Bic. They last for a very long time(compared to other slightly less expensive lighters, like Scripto), aren't very expensive.. and aren't going to blow up in your pocket... Unless your welding. 😉

The flints in those cheap lighters hurt my thumbs! Plus they don't work in even light wind and the button has to be held down.

I got a Zippo today. The instructions say to use Zippo fluid. Is there any reason not to use Ronsonol? It's all kerosene right?

Zippo(wick and feul) or a nice Colibri(butane).

Plus you look cool with a Zippo. I got one and I use some generic fuel that I bought at a gas station and it works fine.
