lighted fans any good?

No, they are like lightbulbs, and because of the really low voltage they run on, they almost never blow. And its not like a blow, its a dimming. BUt its very rare. Lighted fans are awesome, especially in visible cases.

fans die mechanically long before the light will die

Yup; LED's are usually rated for something like 100,000 hours continuous before they reach half-brightness.
You fan will either die, or else need to be re-lubricated well before that ever happens.
