Hi all.
Is there such a thing as an inexpensive lightweight notebook? I would only need it for word processing, but it seems the only lightweight options through Dell, HP, etc. are packed to the gills with useless (at least for me) upgrades. Is there a lightweight alternative for under $1000?

how lightweight are you looking for?

If you are willing to buy used you could try eBay. After a quick, there's a 3.7lb IBM x30 with a buy it now price of $800.

4.4 lbs... $950

Has 256 mb ram.. and a cd rw/ dvd combo....
I almost purchased one of those for my mother last month. Unfortunately, on all the floor models I saw, the screen was very dim. Also, the construction was a little too plasticky for me. Very impressive what you get for the price, though!

SDOG34, my suggestion would be to go used. I ended up getting my mother a used Dell Latitude C400 for $750 with wireless, a year left on the warranty, 256mb ram, external cd burner, 40GB HD, etc off of ebay. The only let down was that it is only a 933 PIII, but that's more than enough horsepower for word processing and websurfing.

Did you go with ebay to get that Dell werk?

Yeah, I was thinking ebay would probably be the place to go.

Abhi, that's a great deal, but too much computer for my purposes...hopefully I can find something cheaper.

Shady06, I have been configuring Dell systems, but they are just out of my price range (unless I go for the 8 lb. ones which I obviously don't want)

it just seems weird to me that the only new lightweight (less than 6 lbs) notebooks are freaking workhorses and damn expensive

here

It's $679. You might want to considering something else though, because that is a 1.3ghz celeron, which is pretty much overkill for what you need it for.

If you only need it for word processing, you could get something that was a pentium II and it would still be fine.
