The average tiger as a species is 160 kg. This explains why the tigon is in the shallow end of the gene pool. The largest liger was 1,600 pounds, thats 8x the weight and size of a balinese tiger.

Martin johnson mentions his lion he shot weighed over 750 lbs, so in the wild...I'd say maximum mass, they're roughly the same, with the tiger longer and the lion taller, in captivity Jaipur (Tiger) was roughly the same weight (both at 1,000 lbs) but he was smaller in size to Sultan (lion), this is why the liger gets the mothers long length, and the fathers tall structure, the tigon gets well....I don't know.

The siberian tiger according to the lastest census done, is much lighter than the currrent weight of crater lions:

No more 800 pounders, most biologist and ecologist like Schaller, Sunquist, Igor, Mazak, ect thinks they never were that big to begin with, as they state most storys are from hunting records that over exaggerate the sizes and have no weighing method mentioned, and other Biologist such as Sidensticker and Yamaguchi says the lion is the tallest, largest in size and heaviest of the two.

Not to mention Jaipur was a freakishly big tiger, which was not large in size, but fat an nutuerd which increases the size of big cats...sultan at the same wight looked more natrual and well muscle toned an wasnt nutured since he still had his mane, tigers the size of Jaipur are also rare, Lions the size of Sultan are quite common, via other lions that breached the 800-1,000 range, Ethipoian court 1k lbs, Ali 1k lbs, Menelick 900 lbs, Logan circus 4 900 pound lions, Brutus 890 lbs, Simba 826 lb, Rutledge 806 lbs, Leo 800 lbs, Clarence and Prince 800 lbs, tarzan zerbinis 4 800 lb lions and on an on... it seems other then over fed tigers that are obese, most websites say the tiger is averagely smaller in captivity, while the lion gets slightly bigger.

This seems to be confirmed since genetically the tigon is smaller than the liger.
