Lift kit questions.

Chunkee

Lifer
I found a used truck I am interested in. It has the features on it that I am wanting, however it rides a bit high. It has a 3 inch body and 3 inch lift kit..of which I know nothing about.

If you could remove one, which would it be and why? How hard is it to remove? Would lowering 3 inches bother those tires/wheels on the truck?

http://asheville.craigslist.org/cto/1345861188.html

Thanks for the information. Just do not know much about them.

God I hate lift-kits. They are rice for trucks. People get them, never take them off-road, and never re-adjust their headlights after they get it lifted and their headlights are right in your mirrors.

Find one without a lift on it so you don't have to worry about it.

Typically body lifts are less desirable than suspension lifts. You get height but no extra suspension travel or ground clearance under the frame to go with it. You only run body lifts for looks or to clear larger tires. Also, you can typically remove a body lift relatively easily, to remove a suspension lift you'd need to track down the stock suspension parts. To remove the body lift you'll at the very least need to find the correct body mounts, I'm not familiar with that truck though to know if there's anything else that would have been changed for a body lift that high.

35"s are pretty large tires and may rub some with the truck lower. If you're thinking of lower the truck I'd go and look at it. Crank the steering hard over to one side then look at clearance around the front tires. If it looks like tire will rub or be close to rubbing if the truck was lower you'd have to drop a tire size. At that point I'd say it's not financially worth it. There's plenty of other trucks out there that won't require a ton of money to get how you want them to be.

Also, one more thing. Take a good look at the lift kit on there. Some things you see driving around are just plain scary. I'm personally not a fan of lift blocks at all. If it looks like some home brew thing that jim bob welded up in his shed I would run away from that thing as fast as you can.

So just because it serves a function doesn't mean it's not rice. Rice is a big spoiler right??? A lift-kit is rice for trucks cus 99% of people with trucks get it only for looks. Getting something only for looks is rice.

OP: Text 😀 Maybe nix the body lift and get appropriate tires - solid front axle Toyota 4x4 == epic. However..maybe I should ask what you want the truck for. 😛

If you're looking just to drive around, find a stock one. If you're wheeling it, I'd strongly recommend that you take a look at the SFA Toyota above.

There are plenty of people who take their trucks offroad. I guess showing you actual photographs of my old truck offroad is insufficient proof to convince you of this fact, so I might as well give up now.

I'll agree that it's idiotic to get a lift kit for looks but they do serve a purpose. I have one lifted jeep and am considering lifting my Cherokee too. It lets me get back to places here in AZ that I wouldn't be able to otherwise. 10 miles of extremely rough trails tends to let you get a bit more privacy for camping than you would otherwise.

one of the reasons for a lifted truck, maybe not that high as the one i listed, is that i am a kayaker...access points for rivers are not desireable...with heavy ruts and uneven grounds. my wife is worried i am going to tear the crap out of the minivan...front wheel drive...i have thunked it pretty good a time or two...plus i am an avid home DIYer. i do all kinds of projects that require hauling. getting ready to put in another driveway..will need to rent a bobcat, etc..

thanks for the information.

Of course there are plenty of people who race their cars as well that would need a wing but it's the people who do it just for the looks make it rice.

Pretty much but I never bring up my car in any conversation in this forum cus it's my personal taste and hell I'd never even recommend anyone to get one. It certainly isn't a car for the general population.

So you can get something just because you like how it looks but it's wrong if someone else gets something that they like?

No I never said what I had wasn't rice. I was agreeing with her.

Yes, but you're saying that people shouldn't get lift kits because they're rice. My point is that if you're free to rice your car however you'd like why shouldn't every one else be able to?

I personally think the lift kits for on road trucks are stupid and I make fun of the trucks I see around with 6 inch lifts and shiny unscratched chrome rims. However, people are free to get whatever stupid things they want.

Of course they are and we are free to express how we feel. Hell people were saying the wing on the 911 GT3 was rice.

Please show me these "plenty of people" who take their Civics on a road course where they are carrying enough speed to make their $40 Pep Boys park bench effective..

Just because its for looks does not make it rice.

Rice is overdoing looks to the point of making it look WORSE, gimmicky, FnF, etc

i'm all for suspension lifts and bigger tires, but body lifts .. blah

the good news is that body lifts are easy to remove. ditch the body lift on that truck, sell the 35's and buy some 33's. the truck will run alot better because of the smaller diameter tires and it won't look goofy with the body sitting way above the frame.

I'm thinking about getting a leveling kit and some slightly bigger tires for my Tundra (nothing crazy though). Sure it's mostly for looks, but I don't think it's rice since the bigger tires (and resulting higher clearance) will help in the snow.

265/75/16s will fit without a lift. 🙂

I would just pass on it altogether and find a used truck without a bunch of useless modifications. Most of those kits are not designed well and will negatively affect performance, increase roll-over likelihood, and lower the resale value. Oh, and I don't understand how anyone can tolerate driving around listening to the roar of their monster truck tires at freeway speeds. That just gets tiring and old after about 5 minutes.
