I hear these drives are great - BUT dont last long. I'd like to get the 40x, but i dont want it dying on me in a few months. If they have a reputation for short lives, then i might go with the LG 32x.

What are your experiences with Lite-On ?

Thanks in advance!

I have yet to see a Lite-On CD-RW fail (that does NOT go for their DVD-ROMs). I have had some major problems with LG drives. I don't recommend them.

it's really luck of the draw as to if your burners' gonna have a short life.
even some plextors die an early death!

I've found the number 1 cause of burner "death" is just dust. I've been able to revive a number of "dead" burners simply by giving them a good cleaning.

Why can't you get another brand if you're worried about Lite-On? Anyway, other brands aren't a lot more expensive. Overall, I'd advice to go with NEC burners. They're reasonably cheap, spin very quiet (it isn't true for the sound they make when ejecting, though), and have excellent dust protection. I had one such burner work for about a year in a system that was on 24/7. And guess what? No dust inside.

My old ass Acer CD-rw drive in my college computer has not failed me yet. I must have burned thousands of cds with it already. I got it a few years ago too. Maybe you should get a Benq cd-rw drive? That's Acer's new name.

Anyway, I also got a Lite-On for my mom's computer that I built several months ago. It is still working fine. Everyone says Lite-Ons are loud, but I haven't noticed it being significantly louder than any other cd-rw drive I've encountered. Anyway, numerous newer drives around my hall have broken down already. I just laugh cause I got a better drive than them at a better price. BAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!

Lite-ons better last a damn long time; I just bought two of them for my main rig. The LTD163 DVD and the 401248 CDRW. They are fairly noisy, but they only make the noise when RuNNIG, which they dont' the entire time the PC is on, so who cares? AS long as they don't kick the bucket in the next few years, I'll be happy. Unlike memory/CPU speed/graphics card, I don't see myself needing a faster DVD/CDRW anytime in the next few years.

The main reason I got the new CDRW was not due to speed (my old burner is a 12x and still works) It's b/c of the Burnproof, which my 12x burner doesn't have. That and the $107-shipped TCWO deal. :D

Just don't buy a Toshiba. I've had a Toshiba DVD-Rom and CDROM die on me in short order. Not sure if Toshiba even still makes drives. If they don't, that's a good thing.

I have had my 24x LG burner for almost 4 months now and it is going strong, it may not seem like along time but I have burnt well over 400 cd's since I got it.

Well Ive had experience with 2 12x/2 24x/and 2 LTD-163's (dvdroms) and so far they are all still working great even under heavy use. I dont know about you, but I'm still a believer...
