lifespan of a laptop display?

Most modern laptops I see nowadays have exceptionally bright displays (when plugged in). My older laptop (omnibook 6000 p3) is like half the brightness. Will any laptop display eventually wear out and be as dim as mine or have these things improved over the years in such a way that they will retain their brightness/contrast better?

Because they depend on backlights(almost always cold cathode tubes, occasionally white LEDs) all LCD screens will eventually get dimmer and eventually fail to light at all. Backlights have definitely improved over time, though, so a given modern screen is likely to hold on pretty well for a fair while. In short, screens have gotten brighter over time, and backlights do wear out; but not generally fast enough to worry about.

You don't have to worry about it unless you plan on keepign your lappy for 10+ years, and by then, you could just pick up the identical, working, model off eb*y (or its successor) for pennies on the dollar.
