Lifespan for a CD burner

ugh

Platinum Member
Hi,

I was wondering if there's any limit to how many CDs I can burn with a CD burner. Is there such thing?

i personally have burnt about 600-700 w/ my sony 10/4/32 in about a year. The burner is making funny noises + vibrating now but it still burns. 🙂

Umm... Just bought a Sony 8/4/32... Hopefully it doesn't break down soon 😉 600-700 isn't a lot is it?

Check out the product's specs and look for MTBF(Mean Time Before Failure) which usually is listed in no. of hours.

It usually states about 10,000 burns before you should have problems.
I think an upgrade will come before you reach that number.

Plextor 4x at work that has burned over 500 cd and is over 4years old. 😀

At home my plextor 8x20 has burned 200+ cds and is less then a year old.

my panasonic 4x8 is 3 yrs old and has done about 1000 burns (not just me, i let others borrow it too), that comes out to be 13.89 straight days of burning.

Cool... I guess I don't really have to worry how many I can burn 😉 Hm... That's strange, I can't find the MTBF nor any stats in the User's Guide...

wholly sh!t! you guyz burn enough CDs!!! My Ricoh 6x4x20 is still clunking along with around 200+ burns under it's belt... been through 3 systems! peace out.

At work, one of my production burners, a Philips 2600, has burned on average, 20 discs a day for the past 4 years. So I guess it has burned about 4000-5000 disc and still going. The funny thing is, this particular model is known universally as the WORST burner ever made, yet I never had problems with it. On my workstation I use an HP 9300 and made about 500 discs in 4 months and never had a coaster.

I bought a SAF 12x4x32x scsi cd burner last year. anyone have any experience with it? I bought it for $150 when the best buy deal was going on last summer.

My drive is 2 years old but probably has just over 100 burns. I just don't have enough crap to backup (or Linux cd's to make) to do too many.

My yamaha 4260ti crapped out after about 11 months and 1100 CDs
(it also had problems with overheating that I repeatedly ignored)

My Ricoh 7060S I bough from my roommate - about a year old and 1000 CDs burned, still going strong.

The Que USB drive at work is not even a year old, had several hundred CDs burned and sucks real bad, but then again, it always sucked real bad.

hope that helps

It is the age more than the number of CDs burned. I have yet to have a CD-RW last a year. They have a very short lifespan. Quality drives should last longer.
