With an impending divorce the one utility that was in the wife's name was recently changed to my name. Not a problem but that caused the account number for said utility to also change. Account1-->account2

Our original checking account is joint, with both our names on it. The original checking account has online banking with its unique login1, and also unique bill-pay profile1 for said above original utility account1.
The new checking account is no-joint, with only my name on it. The new checking account has online banking with its unique login2, and also a unique bill-pay profile2 for said above new utility account2.

If I logged into bank using login2 I only saw bill-pay profiles I created while logged in with that credential. If I logged into bank using login1 I only see bill-pay profiles created while logged in with that credential.
Sometime at the end of July and without notification my bank decides for login2 that it will merge all bill-pay profiles, new and old, for login2.

Because of my ignorance I simply scrolled down the list of bill-pay profiles until I got to said utility, selected it and paid money to it. Unfortunately, that was login2 using profile1 to pay account1 WHICH IS A CLOSED ACCOUNT.
Log into utility for the new account2 and last month and this month's bills are not showing paid.
Log into utility for the old account1 and it isn't show monies received, probably because it is a closed account. But the kicker is bank PAID the utility.

Go into online banking to print out payment verification and it shows bill-pay profile used, amount, the entity being paid but not the entity account number. Must make trip to bank before making trip to utility.

OK, so thanks goes to the bank for merging these profiles and thanks to my soon to be ex wife for making this all possible. :p

I like my bank. They have always been good to me, especially compared to what is left. There were other banks I liked, but they got bought out. As it turned out, I logged into the utility company website under the new account, clicked Pay Now and then looked at the payment history, it actually revealed the payments made by anyone through any means was applied to the address and not the account number. I got lucky.

Personally I dislike incompetence... I don't think I would like your bank at all. :confused_old:

make a pot of tea
sit by the phone
call the bank
go through their endless verification bullshit
veeeeeeeeeeery slowly and thoroughly explain the situation - pretend the agent is a 10yo child
ask the agent if they can confirm they can change the account to how you want it
ask a timescale when it will be complete
call back again to confirm a few days later that the change is being worked on
call again at the set date

meanwhile call all your creditors and explain the situation

i am happy with my Bank Of Scotland despite the fact that a few years back they got some info completely wrong. I brushed it aside because i understand that it must have been that 0.3% of human error. Got it fixed with a nice long call and had zero problems since.
Think "same thing that happens with PC hardware", sometimes you get the piece that's dead out of the box, that doesn't mean that all the hardware sucks, just that you had bad luck.

So keep that bank and accounts, with only the minimum balance, etc., and move everything elsewhere, even see if there is a Credit Union you can join. Worst case, you can transfer everything back once the shitstorm passes. Or you might find you like the other bank/credit union better.

OK, so the monies sent out of the bank to the utility got redirected this morning from the old utility account to the new one. No payment(s) late or missed. Removed the old bill pay profile and life is back to whatever normal is supposed to be for me these days.
