Don't known about Win2K, but in XP you just set it up like any other screen saver and tick the password protect
box.
Found this site offering a free utility to allow a single program to run as a service:
Firedaemon
Just gave it a go and it started Lifemapper o.k. (process listed and CPU jumps up).
(Selected Window Type=Normal, priority=Low, no login info)
The catch is you don't get the tray icon, or any
other means of interacting with the program.
