Hey, that looks interesting! 🙂
Even if it does look a little fishy and have a fowl smell. 😛😉😛😉

I assume it plays well with D2OL? I also assume it needs a continuous connection?

LOL!!
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to play well with D²OL 🙁
It's supposed to be running at low priority, but when I checked with task manager it's at normal.
Doesn't seem to be a command line option to set priority.
That's why I have it on my slower rig on it's own.
It works best on a continuous connection, but it can be set to ask before dialling.
I'm just trying it as something new. I might keep it running, I might not 😀

I would like to give it a go, but am having problems with getting a password after registration, e-mail sent to one of the support guys @Lifemapper. Maybe they can get me going shortly. 🙂

This is really a bump for the thread since Lifemappers last thread got locked.

😉

This is a follow-up on some registration/login problems users are having. Since we are running heavy batch processing on the database, preprocessing and postprocessing data, this may periodically cause the perfomance issues and, as a consequense, login failures. We'll be looking into possible resolution and better error messages.

Hi, guys.

This is Ricardo. I'm one of the programmers of the Lifemapper client that some of you are running.
As some of you might have already noticed, the current version of Lifemapper client runs on normal priority, instead of running in low priority like a good background process. That is due to a bug on the current version of the client that prevents it from changing to low priority after it starts.
The source code has been fixed and will be available soon from the website after a couple of other minor bugs are corrected.
I'll let you know when this new release is out.

Thanks for trying Lifemapper.

Cheers,

Ricardo

OK. The current Lifemapper system does few things:

1) collects and cache ecological data (specimen records, e.g. bird collection records) from several participating bio collections (usually museums) using distributed technology (for more info about distributed data collecting read about Digir Project or Species Analyst Project); data collection process is continuous as data at the original data sources is changing and we need to capture those changes

2) then we generate a atlas of ecological models based on data collected; basically we preprocess data, then ship work units to distributed clients, then postprocess work units returned

3) then the models along with data used for their generation become available from our site as maps, webservices and stats; they are free for everyone's use for research and study purposes;

Hope this helps.

Nice to see someone who's involved in a project visiting the forums of people who run their software 😎

just signed up and converted from DF to Lifemapper 🙂 Even more appropriate to my career path than protein folding ! (can't wait to turn up in stats see how i can do )

AnandTech is already represented as a team if you want to join us 😀
There's only two at the mo, myself and gistech1978.

If my assumptions are correct, this has to do with wildlife?

I'm downloading it now, i'll give it a try on a machine or two 🙂

its sorta fun, i plan on devoting a little more to it when my SAH race is over with which is about halfway now. i will probably just let my laptop work on it.
in fact im gonna give the laptop a little break from seti for the rest of the day and crunch some more for lifemapper.
its just interesting to me since my major in college was in geography.

Hi, Guys.
We are just finishing rescanning KUEntomology database for any new data changes. If you wanna help to rebuild our bug models quicker, change your pref to Insects. The new bug jobs should be available shortly. Thanks. LM

I'm running it now on my 1ghz Tbird.

How large are the files being downloaded? I am on dial up sharing between 6 - 7 computers at a time.

How long does a unit generally take? Right now I am processing the American Black Bear!

It's at 17% already and I just started it maybe 5 minutes ago.

I find my Athlon XP 1900 = 25 mins, P3 800 about 1 hour.
All the data folders seem to be about 1.5 mb.

Wow! That's a pretty good sized file!

I doubt i'll be running this much unless the file size is decreased! Dial up kinda sucks when you have 6 computers wanting to download a 1.5 mb file every 30-60 minutes 🙁
