Wow. That's unfortunate that this isn't regularly taught in high school. It's pretty damn important.

If you're up for an interesting read, grab a copy of The Creature From Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin. Not stuff you want to read before bed, it's pretty scary.

The average public high school history student usually takes 2 years/semesters of US history, and in those 2 semesters, they've got to get from colonial times all the way up through the 20th century. It's a lot to cover...it's not that it's an unimportant fact, it's just so recent and there is so much other stuff to cover in such a relatively short time.
