My 200 GB hard drive just died. All my pictures, video, software, and audio files are lost.

I have three hard drives: a 40, a 80, and a 200.
My 80 is my temp hard drive and has no data on it; so of course this one doesn't die :disgust:.
My 40 is my system drive. Of course if it had died id replace it with a raptor (almost wish it would die  ).
So two the three are ones i can or want to replace, but do they die? Of course not.
I backed up some of the files (mainly software, pictures and audio) from the hard drive so some of the data is saved (~8GB of the 80GB was saved).

The only plus side is i registered the hard drive the day i bought it and its covered under warenty till 2006. After finals i'll send it back to WD and they will send me a new one within 5-10 business days after recieving my broken hard drive.

Ciffnotes:
Of the three hard drives i have, the one that dies is the hardest to replace.
The hard drive was my storage hard drive with 80+ gigs (hard, if not impossible, to replace).
On plus side its covered under warrenty so ill get it replaced, so i get a new, empty, 200 GB hard drive.

This is definatly a scary omen for this week--exam week :frown:.

Stick it in a freezer for a while, then try and get it to boot up so you can rescue the data.
The cold contracts the metal and stuff I think, so it works again (for a bit).
A few hours is needed, someone will post a link.

Does it spin up? I've gotten data off drives that couldn't be access or recognized by Windows using GetDataBack.

While we are at it, how do I backup? I have around 80 GB of data I want to backup. DVD sounds nice, but that's a lot of DVDs.

lost a 18 page paper...but i already handed it in, , have all my college papers saved on every hard drive, 2 different cd-rws, saved on floopys, and to top it off printed a extra hard copy (in case something happed to the one i needed to hand in gets wet and ink goes every which way). Had i not turned it in, or had a hard copy. OT would be posting about a madison student that jumps from dorm room after his hard drive dies that contained his 1 credit Zoology 699 paper (whole grade is off this paper). :p

Actually now that i know i didnt lose anything too important i dont feel as bad, its just that my three harddrives the newest, largest, and hardest dies.

I've must of been a serial killer in a past life to get this luck. My family refers to it as "Linder Luck." When i called my mom, to get the warrenty info (info is at my home), the first thing i told her was "Linder luck struck again" and she knew right away something bad happened, again.

Also, im not gonna try the freezer trick just because when i woke-up the harddrive wasn't working and when i felt it it was very hot. Since its covered under warrenty i dont want to do anything to void this.

Your 2 options are to get an external (or removable, which is cheaper) 80GB drive or to get a DVD burner (approx 17 blanks).

edit: and BigJelly, if you have a reputation for killing hard drives, buy a new high-end power supply and get some better hard drive cooling... also make sure that your PCI bus is in spec at 33MHz (if you OC).

During my first two years in college, I ALWAYS had to reformat during exam week or the week before. It never failed that Windows would crash. Those days were Windows 95, 98 and NT4 and the hardware was either a Pentium 120 or a K6-200,

nope no reputation, i have an antec 400W smart-power power supply, have 2 fans cooling the hard drives (antec case fan and a thermatake fan) and pci is locked at 33MHz.
