I don't think the possibility of functioning mecha is that far off. Design would probably be closer to mechs of BattleTech universe. Question is whether they would be practical/efficient weapons in warfare. OF course they wouldn't be at first, but as the technology progresses...
really it's not that different from robot technology already being used, except on a much larger scale. And with human pilots vs robot A.I. might mean more focus is need on the mechanics and movement synchronization between parts rather than an A.I.

Even if they aren't built for combat, I could see them being built for really expensive amusement.
 
That's not life size. It's more like half size. Look at the dude on its left shoulder. A real Gundam's way bigger than that.
