The past 6 years of my life have passed rather quickly, but not without events that punctuated that time with memories that I'll hold forever. I think a lot of people get into a rhythm where they're looking more forward to Fridays than they are anything that advances their goals. Thinking that "life blazes by" is only in retrospect, and you'll only think so if you don't feel you've accomplished anything in that time. We all need goals for the future and acknowledgements of those realized goals from the past.
Avoid the rhythm at all costs.

It's just a different race. There seems to be a common misconception that running your own business somehow automatically means freedom; in fact, it's quite the contrary. You have far, far more obligations than you ever had as an employee of someone else's organization, and they're not obligations that you can ignore without incredible detriment. You work so many hours that your business really becomes who you are rather than a part of you.
The promises are that you'll be in the race for a shorter period of time; a sprint rather than a marathon. You also have the excitement of watching your business grow, chasing new and exciting opportunities, etc. It definitely betters the banalities of cubicle dwelling 9-5 5x a week, but it's not for everyone.
I think the reality is that a lot of people like the proverbial rat race whether they admit it or not. Some people like to wake up and know
exactly what's going to happen that day with little deviation from the norm. Determism in your work allows you to concentrate on other things (e.g. family), but if you're running your own business you're assuming all the volatility that goes along with it.
