Life Before the Internet

anyone remember what life was like before the internet went mainstream? I was 12 when I first plugged into the net (1994), and I can't remember how I killed time without the internet.

I couldn't even begin to imagine what the workplace was like before there was a computer on every desk.

someone enlighten me.

Life was a lot simpler to me back then.

Of course, I love the communication abilities available now. I remember being so thrilled when I first used AIM and realized I could talk to friends across the country for free. 🙂

I didn't use the internet until I went to college in Fall of 1996 at age 18.

Wait..there was a time before the internet? 😕

I vaguely remember it. It was back when I had a social life and would spend my free time watching TV (in a twist of fate, I now watch TV on my computer). I also remember joining a local BBS to play Doom on. Those were the days.

BBS!!!

Yep. I used a Commodore 64 and dialed into BBS's with my 1200 baud rate modem (started with a 300 baud rate modem)

I still have a working Commodore 64 with like 5 boxes full of games on 5 1/2 in. floppies. 😱

I remember extensive bbs systems in the mid to late 80s. They had it all, forums, file transfers, porn, chat. Just you had to often redial for a long time to get an available line. The online community was far more local, so you often end up meeting others in the area with events like picnics and such. Sad to see that gone.

hmm played videogames at the arcades... go out to the parks play diffrent sports, biked, rollerbladed or just random things in the neighborhood.

how did people get plane tickets?

There existed EasySabre, as I recall. You could access them through compu$erve, genie, qlink (AOL in its infancy for C64 users), and such.

I still play on BBSes. 🙂

They've mostly gone the way of the dodo, though... for obvious reasons.

My first PC was an IBM/XT and a 2400baud modem.

4.77MHz, baybe! Yes, that's four(4) followed by a decimal.

😉

I also remember Q-link (Quantam Link) in the mid/late 80's; a C-64 targeted multi user arena with games and chat rooms. They later changed their name to America Online.

we purchased the services of AOL when I was in 5th grade. I am entering my third year of college now. That would make it roughly ten years? i am twenty now, and i do not remember life before the internet!
