Life after paint

Is it possible to dye drive faceplates that have been painted? I'd be going from a blu-ish paint to a lighter color, possibly even white.

sand it, prime it then paint it

sand the paint off, smooth every thing down with a fine grit paper, then dye it.

Ok, wasn't sure if it was possible to dye it prior to painting. Looks like I have some work to do. :/
