Just a little question for you all:

How come that in the movie U571 changes the facts, as explained here and gets away with it?

It is a known fact that the Brits did the actions (loosely) described in the movie, and not the Yanks.

All hollywood did was change the name of the sub from U570 to U571.

Why did this falsification of history happen? To make the US look great in the eyes of the world? Why not make a movie about the american concentration camps where a lot of asian people got locked away in, and pretend that it were the British that committed those crimes?

What's next?

not necessarily to make us great in the eyes of the whole world, but in our own eyes. we like to feel good about ourselves.

Apparently, someone is jealous their screenplay wasn't chosen for the movie:

<< In 1976 I was commissioned by Roy Skeggs and Brian Lawrence of Cinema Arts International Ltd at Elstree to write a screenplay based on my radio play. It was called "U-570" and, like many film projects, was stillborn. >>

Hollywood is not history, for crying-out loud how many times does that need to be said? If you want to learn history, watch an A&E or History Channel documentary. Even better, read a NON-FICTION book.

If you want to be entertained, watch a Hollywood production.

Have you figured it out yet? I really don't know how much clearer it could be.

Yup...even movies which are supposed to be historically accurate like "Saving Private Ryan" have a few inaccuracies in it, probably for Hollywood's sake.

Reality version:
Soon to be released: Rambo IV, where Rambo sits quietly in a US military camp while no wars are in progress, except the cold war in which no fighting takes place.

Hollywood version:
Soon to be released: Rambo IV, where Rambo single-handedly takes on the entire Russian, Chinese, North-Korean, Iraqi, Iranian, and-any-other-country-americans-feel-hostile-against armies, and eliminates them all. All the locals are extremely happy to help him if they are pretty, or are mean bastards if they are ugly. He then continues to kick Satan's ass and kills the Emperor. After he uses the Schwartz to also kill the Cylons he destroys the evil Ferengi empire, the only thing more capitalistic in this universe than the USA.

Edit: Typo fixed
Edit 2: Fixed the non-typo I fixed :)

While we're at it: What is it with ID4?!? They use a Mac to hack in to a alien computer and plant a virus there?!?!?! HELLO???

1. How do they know that the aliens use TCP/IP?
2. How do they know that their Wireless Networks (I failed to see any CAT5-cables when Jeff Golblum hacked their computer) are compatible with terran standard?
3. How did they know that their virus was compatible with their systems? Windows-viruses don't work in Linuxd, but their viruses work on alien computers? Yeah right!
4. How did they know that the aliens used binary computers at all?
5. The aliens didn't have any kind of firewall? Antivirus-software?

"uploading virus"... Oh for crying out loud!

I was disappointed in the whole movie for these reasons alone. I try to ignore minor problems with movies but this was too much for me to ignore. I thought the humans should have just died :)

I would have been content had Jeff Goldblums character died, but I guess I'm asking for too much... Actually, the entire movie sucked. It sucks so bad it isn't even funny. Seeing Jeff Goldblum die would at least partly redeem that movie, but NOOOO!!!

I don't think that anyone here is getting my point.

There's a difference in romanticising a fact or situation ('titanic'), creating a fantasy story around a real situation ('saving private ryan') or even plain fantasy ('id4'), and twisting around the facts of history.

There's no question that the 'surrounding story' from SPR is true or not. The same about ID4.

But falsifying history in a movie is a completely different thing.

I guess that nobody gets that over here...

What's next? Hitler was the american president? Osama's his brother? Dubya is a good guy?

Sad...

I get your point completely Hummer. I'm not talking about how there was no "Saving Private Ryan" mission in WWII. I'm saying that there are historical inaccuracies in the movie itself. For example, if you look at the thousands of men in that movie, how many of them are African American, Native American, or Japanese American?

This brings up a good point. You're in the minority. You may see this as a cinematic fallacy, but the masses do not. Imagine if the scene were changed to say something like...

"I'm going to hax0r the aliens using my custom tcp/ip stack on my crapintosh hooking into their IEEE 802.11 compliant wireless network, and load a virus written for Windows EE (Extraterrestrial Edition)!' " Why Windows EE you ask? We all know MS and Company are universally pervasive.

The masses don't care about details.

"The Lord of the Rings" had a ~30-minute introduction covering the first 200 pages of the book and about the same time dedicated to five. Parts of the Two Towers (SECOND book in the trillogy) were placed at the end of the film.

Pearl Harbor has nothing to do with a love story whatsoever (DUH). More interestingly, "Japanese" and "American" versions were created, both in the actual film itself and in the advertisements. Personally, I don't think Pearl Harbor should have been the horrendous romance-filled "chic flick" that it was. Kind of insulting to the thousands that died on that day. "Tora, Tora, Tora," in my opinion, is one of the best films created to date on the subject - while an action film, it does not give in as easily to the mass commercialism of Hollywood. Just my two cents.

For those of you with problems with ID4 you might find this little joke particullary funny. This was posted shortly after the movie came out to USENET.

<< CERT(sm) Advisory CA-96.13
July 4, 1996

Topic: ID4 virus, Alien/OS Vulnerability

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CERT Coordination Center has received reports of weaknesses in
Alien/OS that can allow species with primitive information sciences
technology to initiate denial-of-service attacks against MotherShip(tm)
hosts. One report of exploitation of this bug has been received.

When attempting takeover of planets inhabited by such races, a trojan
horse attack is possible that permits local access to the MotherShip
host, enabling the implantation of executable code with full root access
to mission-critical security features of the operating system.

The vulnerability exists in versions of EvilAliens' Alien/OS 34762.12.1
or later, and all versions of Microsoft's Windows/95. CERT advises
against initiating further planet takeover actions until patches
are available from these vendors. If planet takeover is absolutely
necessary, CERT advises that affected sites apply the workarounds as
specified below.

As we receive additional information relating to this advisory, we will
place it in

ftp://info.cert.org/pub/cert_advisories/CA-96.13.README

We encourage you to check our README files regularly for updates on
advisories that relate to your site.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I. Description

Alien/OS contains a security vulnerability, which strangely enough
can be exploited by a primitive race running Windows/95. Although
Alien/OS has been extensively field tested over millions of years by
EvilAliens, Inc., the bug was only recently discovered during a
routine invasion of a backwater planet. EvilAliens notes that
the operating system had never before been tested against a race
with "such a kick-ass president."

The vulnerability allows the insertion of executable code with
root access to key security features of the operating system. In
particular, such code can disable the NiftyGreenShield (tm)
subsystem, allowing child processes to be terminated by unauthorized
users.

Additionally, Alien/OS networking protocols can provide a
low-bandwidth covert timing channel to a determined attacker.

II. Impact

Non-privileged primitive users can cause the total destruction of
your entire invasion fleet and gain unauthorized access to
files.

III. Solution

EvilAliens has supplied a workaround and a patch, as follows:

A. Workaround

To prevent unauthorized insertion of executables, install a
firewall to selectively vaporize incoming packets that do not
contain valid aliens. Also, disable the "Java" option in
Netscape.

To eliminate the covert timing channel, remove untrusted
hosts from routing tables. As tempting as it is, do not use
target species' own satellites against them.

B. Patch

As root, install the "evil" package from the distribution tape.

(Optionally) save a copy of the existing /usr/bin/sendmail and
modify its permission to prevent misuse.

Filmmaking isn't about historical accuracy, it's about telling the best story possible. Period.

If you want the truth behind something, watch a documentary because that's what they are for.
