So i ordered WIN XP PRO and a new license for my department.
I got the license on a piece of paper and a burnt copy of win xp pro.

are universities allowed to duplicate windows cds as long as the purchase new license codes each time?

The media is in no way related to the license. Heck, MSDN subscribers get DVD's with multiple ISO's per DVD.

The serial number (license) is the important part, as long as that's legit you're good to go no matter where/how you got the install media.

Did they just give you a peice of notebook paper with the Cd-Key? If you didn't get a Certificate of Authenticity then you paid for absolutly NOTHING. I would get my momney back. If they just gave you a paper with a number written on it most likely you paid for windows XP corperate, which they most likley downloaded for free. SUE :p

Did you actually pay for it or does your university have MSCA?

MSCA?

the department bought it from the University Computing people.
They only paid $61 for the cd and license. Which is really cheap.

It sounds like you're at a university that has a deal with Microsoft. If this is the case, then you're fine.

MSCA is the campus agreement. I don't think that they have it since they paid $61 for the software. I pay $5 for mine from Purdue.

I would take it up with whoever sent you the CD, if that doesn't work, contact Microsoft; I'm sure they'd love to hear about a university that is pirating their software.

I still wouldn't pay $61 for a burnt CD and a computer peice of paper, I would want tht fancy designed COA :p

Maybe it is a site license and they maintain the certificate(s) at a central location? Even corporate editions need the license key for an install. Is the "purchase" a way they charge your departments budget for IT resources?

You got ripped either way, something doesnt sound right about this to me. They shouldn't be charging your for the CD just the license. I would contact them and ask whats up.

thats true.. they could hold the real in a central location but i dont know if they do.

no, i dont think its a charge for IT.....

Students can get the XP software for like ~$75 and they get the real holographic cd and stuff. and certificate.

State agencys will commonly copy discs for software they have corporate licenses to. Usually the corp licenses only come with one disc, the expectation being that the company will go around with the same disc installing the software. (that and it's cheaper and less hassle than printing up 100+ discs) Besides, as was mentioned, it's the license number that counts. Ask them to see the COA for the serial number; they might have only gotten one or two copies of it, hence the printout.
